Zempler Everyday is a personal current account from Zempler Bank, the UK bank that used to be called Cashplus. It is a fee-free everyday account with a contactless bank card, an app and Online Banking, and optional paid add-ons such as an overdraft, international payments and a travel currency card. Zempler says it does not pay interest on its personal current accounts1.
The most important thing to know before anything else: personal current accounts at Zempler are temporarily closed to new applications1. If you already hold a Zempler personal account, it carries on as normal and you can still switch between Zempler's own pricing plans. If you are looking to open one, you cannot at the moment, and the sections below explain what that means in practice.
Zempler is a UK bank offering a personal current account with no monthly fee and a free business bank account, with the app available on the iOS App Store and Google Play4. Your money in a Zempler account is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £120,000 per person, per bank6.
What the Zempler Everyday account offers: card, app and add-ons
The account is built around a contactless bank card and a mobile app. The app is available on the iOS App Store and Google Play, and Zempler describes it as the place to activate your card, get your PIN, check your balance, view your statements, make payments and manage your cards11. You can freeze and unfreeze a card instantly online or in the app if something does not look right or you lose it, and you can temporarily block a card or report it lost or stolen3.
Online Banking covers the same ground on a larger screen: tracking spending and seeing statements, itemised billing to track expenses, and making payments13. Balances are shown in real time, 24/7, in the app or in Online Banking14.
Zempler sells the account as something you customise with add-ons, available if you need them1. The add-ons it lists are international payments, overdrafts and a travel currency card1. International payments run through Wise Platform and are available to both business and personal account holders15. The Euro travel currency card can be ordered once you have received and activated your Zempler Bank account card15.
There are also credit products attached to the wider Zempler range rather than the Everyday account itself, including a credit card with no annual or monthly fee and a Creditbuilder product16. Those are separate applications with their own terms.
How Zempler charges work for paying money in and out
Zempler's personal accounts are priced by plan, and the plan you are on decides what you pay. The free plan is the one Zempler describes as a personal account with no monthly fee17. The paid plans carry a monthly charge and include allowances that the free plan does not.
On the Activeplus plan, Zempler lists a monthly fee, a card fee, nine free payments and transfers a month with a charge after that, free and unlimited receiving of money, and free cash withdrawals in the UK and outside it3. The Activeplus Freedom plan lists three free payments and transfers a month with a charge after that, and free and unlimited receiving of money3. The exact figures for each plan sit on Zempler's own pages, which carry today's numbers.
Two things are worth separating out. First, receiving money is free and unlimited on the plans Zempler lists, so the charge falls on sending, not on being paid3. Second, moving between Zempler's own pricing plans is free, and your card keeps working and your account number and sort code stay the same when you do it10. Any eligible cashback payments are credited to the new account when you switch plans10.
Who can apply, and why new personal applications are paused
Zempler states plainly that personal current accounts are temporarily closed to new applications1. The same notice appears on the Freedom plan page and on the Activeplus page, so it applies across the personal range rather than to one product2.
Zempler has not said in these pages when applications will reopen. What it does say is that account opening and account switching are separate processes, and that the new bank carries out know your customer security checks before a switch date can be agreed19. That matters if you were hoping to move an existing account across: the switch cannot start until the account exists.
If you already hold a Zempler personal account, the pause does not affect you. You can still move between Zempler's pricing plans, and you can still close a Creditbuilder plan and, once it is closed, may be able to switch to a plan without a monthly fee10.
For anyone who cannot open a Zempler personal account at the moment, the practical question is what else is available. Basic bank accounts are designed for people who cannot get a standard account or who do not want an overdraft, and there is a separate route through basic bank accounts explained and who can get a basic bank account. If you have been refused an account elsewhere, what to do if you're refused a basic bank account sets out the options.
The overdraft add-on: how limits are set and reviewed
The Zempler overdraft is not a separate product. It is attached to your current account and acts as a temporary safety net if you run low on funds, and Zempler describes it as always available up to an approved limit20. It is one of the credit add-ons Zempler offers eligible customers, alongside business overdrafts and credit cards21.
Limits are reviewed every six months10. You can ask for your limit to be reduced or removed at any time by contacting Zempler16. Zempler sends alerts when you are about to enter your overdraft, when you have entered it, and when you are reaching your limit10.
Applying for the overdraft means reading and accepting a Credit Agreement and the account terms22. Zempler includes a Representative Example in its overdraft offers and on its website, showing the total payable cost for the overdraft over a three-month period, so you can see what borrowing at that level would cost before you accept21. The current cost of borrowing sits on Zempler's own pages.
There is a repeat use rule that can change things. Zempler says it will send reminders if it observes repeat overdraft usage, and if it is concerned you may be in financial difficulty it may get in touch to discuss other options such as a credit freeze23. If it believes repeat use may be causing you financial difficulties, it may temporarily suspend use of the overdraft while a way forward is discussed23. Your overdraft statement shows your credit limit, your balance on the statement date, the amount of interest charged and the rate it was charged at, the minimum payment due and the payment due date23.
The wider rules on how overdrafts work, what they cost and when a bank must alert you are covered in overdrafts explained, how overdraft interest and charges work and when your bank must alert you about overdrafts. If an overdraft has become hard to clear, struggling to repay an overdraft sets out the help available.
Banking with Zempler: app, Online Banking and Post Office cash deposits
Day-to-day banking runs through the app and Online Banking. Payments can be made in either, and Online Banking handles both immediate payments and payments set up for the future13. You can view your balance in real time, 24/7, in the app or in Online Banking14.
Paying money in is where Zempler differs from a high street bank. Cash can be deposited over the counter at any UK Post Office, and Zempler has teamed up with the Post Office so customers can deposit cash at any of its 11,500+ branches across the UK9. Cheques are not accepted8. Zempler states that it does not currently allow customers to deposit money into their account with a cheque3.
There are limits on how much cash you can pay in over a year, and the renewal date depends on when you opened the account. If you opened your account after 30 November 2022, your annual limit renews based on your account start date24. If you are using a personal account as a sole trader and need higher cash deposit limits, Zempler points to its business accounts instead24.
Proof of identity and address: the documents Zempler accepts
Most applications are verified electronically. If Zempler cannot verify your identity and address details during the application, it will request documents from you by personalised email before the account can be opened25.
For proof of identity, Zempler accepts a passport from any country, which must be valid and does not need to be signed if it is a UK passport; a UK driving licence, provisional or full, with front and back of the card; an EU driving licence with front and back; an EEA member state ID card; a firearms certificate or shotgun licence with front and back; a Northern Ireland electoral ID card; a construction industry scheme card; and a military ID card25.
For proof of address, a bank or building society statement works if it is an original or a PDF dated within the last three months. PDFs are only accepted alongside a passport or UK driving licence, and the PDF must show your full name, address, date and account details. Printouts stamped by a bank branch are accepted; printouts from Online Banking or a branch are not25.
Two rules catch people out. The same document cannot verify both your identity and your address, so a UK driving licence used as ID needs a second document for address25. And every document must be clearly readable, not blurred or glaring, valid and current rather than expired, dated within the last three months if it is a letter, complete including both sides where relevant, and showing your current address. Screenshots are not accepted25.
Where a payment needs verifying, Zempler may ask for documents such as payslips or salary confirmation, downloaded bank statements, invoices or bills, rental agreements or contracts, remittance advice, contracts between a business and its supplier, bank statements showing business revenue or profits, or proof of payment from clients for business income. The document must clearly show who paid you, what the payment is for, and the sender and recipient's sort code and account number26.
The general rules on what banks ask for are in what ID you need to open a bank account and how to open a current account.
Scams and fraud: how Zempler refunds work and how to complain
If you have made a payment or shared financial details with a suspected scammer, Zempler asks you to call 0330 024 0924, or +44 207 153 8940 from abroad, as soon as you realise27. Zempler also asks you to check your statements, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or through its website, and obtain a crime reference number to give Zempler27. If you receive a suspicious phone call and cannot find the bank's number, Stop Scams phoneline 159 can connect you to Zempler28.
Zempler has warned about fake emails from people pretending to be the bank about suspicious activity on a customer account. Its advice is not to call the number in the email but to use the contact page instead28. The general rule it gives is that if you are ever unsure, hang up and call the bank back29.
Claims under the app fraud reimbursement rules are assessed on evidence of first-party fraud, your vulnerability, evidence of gross negligence, and whether the claim qualified under the reimbursement requirement27. Claims are processed within 5 working days and, if approved, reimbursed within that time. Where extra information is needed, it can take up to 35 business days to resolve a claim27.
If you have a vulnerability that has a material impact on your ability to protect yourself from a scam, you will not be required to pay it27.
On the account side, Zempler runs 24/7 fraud monitoring with instant card freeze on its business accounts2. If you want to stop a stored card payment, you have the right to cancel consent to stored bank card details at any point by calling the customer service team16.
If something goes wrong and you are unhappy with how Zempler handled it, the Financial Ombudsman Service can look at complaints about banks, and the ICO handles nuisance calls and marketing contact30. The wider picture on scams and your rights is in unauthorised payments from your bank account and scams and fraud.
FSCS protection: how your money is covered
Eligible deposits with Zempler Bank are protected up to a total of £120,000 by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme6. The same figure appears on the Activeplus plan page as FSCS protection up to £120,000 on eligible deposits3.
If you hold more than one account with Zempler, the balances count together towards the same limit. The FSCS sets the same £120,000 figure for credit union accounts, protected up to £120,000 in total across all accounts you hold with the credit union31.
It is worth being clear about what FSCS deposit protection does and does not cover. It protects eligible deposits if the bank fails. It is not the same as the protection that applies to insurance products, where the FSCS pays 90% of a claim for warranty cover and 100% for whole of life assurance30. And it does not cover you if you are tricked into sending money to a scammer, which is handled through the fraud reimbursement rules described above rather than through FSCS.
Zempler Bank is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority, with firm reference number 671140, authorised with effect from 05/02/20164. It appears on the Bank of England's list of banks incorporated in the UK authorised to accept deposits, dated 01 September 20265. The company is active on the Companies House register under company number 04947027, incorporated on 2003-10-2932.
The FCA Register lists the firm's previous names as Cashplus Bank, Cashplus, Capital Recovery Solutions, APS Financial and Advanced Payment Solutions Limited, and its permissions include entering into regulated credit agreements as lender and accepting deposits4.
The general rules on deposit protection, including how the limit works across accounts and what counts as eligible, are in is my current account protected?.
Switching to Zempler, and moving between plans
Zempler supports the free Current Account Switch Service, which it says makes switching stress-free and takes 7 days1. The balance on your old account is transferred automatically to your Zempler account, and all BACS and Faster Payments sent to your old account are redirected to your Zempler account18.
The catch is the application pause. Because personal current accounts are temporarily closed to new applications, a switch into a new Zempler personal account is not currently available1. Account opening and account switching are separate processes, and the new bank carries out know your customer security checks before a switch date can be agreed19.
If you already hold a Zempler account, moving between Zempler's own pricing plans is free, your card continues to work as normal, and your account number and sort code stay the same10. If you have a Creditbuilder plan, you may be able to switch to a plan without a monthly fee once it is closed33.
For anyone weighing up a switch elsewhere, the Current Account Switch Service explains how the guarantee works, how long a bank switch takes covers the timetable, and how bank switching offers work explains the conditions attached to cash incentives.
Managing an account through illness, death or third party access
Zempler has set procedures for the points where someone else needs to act on an account.
For a power of attorney, you call Zempler's team to notify them and then mail or email the power of attorney document. An enduring power of attorney must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be registered on a Zempler account. As attorney, you can request statements for the account by contacting the team34. Zempler does not accept a personal welfare deputy35.
Where a guardianship order applies, the guardian can manage the account, request account statements, update details, manage payments and Direct Debits, and open and close accounts36. For a Court of Protection order, you call the team to notify them and then mail or email a copy of the order37.
When an account holder dies, Zempler asks to be told as soon as possible by email or phone35. Once notified, the account is frozen, the card is cancelled, and no payments go out including Direct Debits and standing orders, until documents are received and an executor or next of kin is confirmed35. Zempler asks for the death certificate or coroner's certificate, proof of identity, proof of home address as a separate document, and the will if available with the executors' details and ID35.
For a sole trader account, the account is frozen on notification, cards are cancelled, debt is written off and funds are transferred to the executor or next of kin after document review35. For a limited company account, Zempler sends a letter to the next of kin, executor or solicitor with next steps once it receives the death certificate, and a change of directorship is needed for the account to continue35. If the account is transferred to another director, the debt remains on the account until the balance is repaid38. Funds belonging to a deceased person can be used for urgent expenses such as a funeral on a case-by-case basis38.
The general rules are covered in power of attorney and third party access to bank accounts and what happens to a bank account when someone dies.
