Danske Freedom

Danske Freedom is a current account for 18 to 27 year olds, with no monthly account fee and no Danske charges for using the debit card abroad. Here is who can open one, how the overdraft and joint account rules work, how to apply or switch, and what happens if something goes wrong.

Danske Freedom, with the Danske Bank logo

Danske Freedom is a personal current account from Danske Bank aimed at people aged 18 to 27. It has no monthly account fee, comes with a Contactless Debit Mastercard, and Danske Bank says it will not charge you fees when you take out cash or pay using your debit card abroad, or for online non-sterling purchases1.

The account is one of five personal current accounts Danske Bank offers, alongside Danske Choice, Danske Reward, Danske Choice Plus and Danske Prestige2. Freedom sits at the younger end of that range: the bank describes it as suitable whether you are a student, a graduate, or just starting out on the career ladder3.

The most important thing to know before applying is where you live. If you are new to Danske Bank, you need to be a resident in Northern Ireland to open a Freedom account. If you are already a Danske Bank customer, the requirement is that you are a resident in the United Kingdom1. The bank's own pages carry today's figures for any rates, fees and limits that apply.

What the Danske Freedom account offers

Freedom is built around everyday banking rather than a packaged bundle of insurance or perks. The account comes with a Contactless Debit Mastercard, and Danske Bank states that it will not charge you fees when you take out cash or pay using your debit card abroad, or for any online non-sterling purchase1. That puts it alongside the bank's Danske Discovery account, which the bank also describes as fee-free including when you use your card abroad, and ahead of accounts where a foreign transaction charge applies4.

When you apply for Freedom you are automatically signed up for eBanking and digital statements1. That matters in practice: eBanking is the route into the bank's alerts, its card controls and its app, so a Freedom customer who wants paper statements or who does not use online banking will need to raise that with the bank.

Danske Bank also offers a free budgeting tool on its website, separate from the account itself5. The bank's savings range sits alongside the current account, with easy access accounts giving 24/7 access to your money, and application online or in branch depending on the account6.

The bank's terms state that Danske personal current accounts are offered subject to status, eligibility criteria and its lending policy7.

Who can open a Danske Freedom account

Two rules decide most applications. The first is age: you must be 18 to 27 years old1. The second is residency, and it works differently depending on whether you are already a Danske Bank customer.

If you are new to Danske Bank, you need to be a resident in Northern Ireland1. If you are an existing customer looking to open a current account, you need to be a resident in the United Kingdom1. The same split appears on the bank's other current account pages, including Danske Reward, Danske Choice and Danske Standard8. In practice that means a new customer in England, Scotland or Wales cannot open Freedom, while an existing Danske Bank customer living anywhere in the UK can.

There is no joint option for under-18s: Danske Bank states that a joint account cannot be opened for anyone under 187. Joint accounts can be opened online with a maximum of two account holders7.

If you are leaving a relationship where money was controlled, Danske Bank says it can help you open an account in your sole name only and discuss the documents you might need to do this11. That sits alongside the bank's wider support for customers in difficult circumstances5.

Fees, overdraft charges and using the card abroad

Freedom has no monthly account fee2. That is the headline, but the charges that catch people out on any current account are usually overdraft interest, unpaid transaction fees and card replacement.

On spending abroad, Danske Bank states that it will not charge you fees when you take out cash or pay using your debit card abroad, or for any online non-sterling purchase1. That is the bank's own charge only. The exchange rate used to convert your spending is set by the card scheme and the bank's card exchange rate, and the bank publishes worked examples of how a purchase and withdrawal are converted12.

Overdrafts are where the detail matters most. Danske Bank's overdraft pages set out the rates and charges that apply, and the bank publishes its information tables with the current figures13. The bank also offers a free budgeting tool and a page on how to reduce fees5. If you are struggling with repayments, the bank has a dedicated support page15.

Extra perks for Freedom customers: loans and mortgages

Freedom account holders can access Danske Bank's borrowing products, though most of them have their own eligibility rules that go beyond holding the current account.

The bank states that Freedom customers can get better fixed rates on personal loans taken by account holders1. The Home Owner's Personal Loan is a variable rate loan available only to Danske mortgage customers, and eligibility requires an existing Danske Bank customer with both a Danske Bank personal current account that has been open and operational for at least 6 months and a Danske Bank residential mortgage16.

On mortgages, Danske Bank's mortgages include options for overpayments and lump sums18. If you already have a Danske mortgage and want to change product or term, the bank has a support page for that15. First-time buyers get a step-by-step guide, and the bank states that it currently covers the cost of the basic valuation report, while optional additional checks or more detailed surveys are arranged by you at your own expense19.

If you move home with a Danske fixed rate mortgage, you may be able to port it, subject to the bank's lending, affordability and eligibility criteria. You must have a new offer from Danske Bank before you sell your old home, and no early repayment charge is applied if the sale of the old home and the purchase of the new one complete on the same day20.

Joint Freedom accounts: shared access, shared debts

A joint account links both people's financial records together.

A Freedom account can be held jointly, and the rules are the same as for the bank's other joint current accounts. Danske Bank states that all parties are jointly responsible for any debts incurred on the account, including overdrafts or debit balances1. Both parties can request a Contactless Debit Mastercard7.

The bank is direct about the credit file consequences. It states that a joint account links your financial records together, and that having a shared debt with someone with a poor credit history could make it harder for you to borrow money in the future7. Credit reference agencies will link your financial records together, which may affect your personal credit scores1.

Access is shared in the everyday sense: all account holders can independently access funds and carry out transactions, and the bank may block the account during a dispute between holders9. StepChange, the debt charity, makes the same point in plain terms: either person can withdraw whatever money they want from it21.

If you are separating, or if you have a joint account with someone who has abused you, Danske Bank says it can talk to you about your options11. Third Party Access is a separate arrangement that lets someone you trust have access to your account to help you manage your money7.

Banking with Danske: app, eBanking, branches and Post Office

Freedom is designed around digital banking. You are automatically signed up for eBanking and digital statements when you apply1. The Mobile Banking app is available for iOS and Android devices to customers who use eBanking, and the bank describes it as giving you a simple way to control your money, 24 hours a day, after completing eBanking logon22.

You can pay bills or transfer money to other accounts quickly and easily with eBanking and the Mobile Banking app, 24 hours a day24. The bank also offers a range of alerts that can be managed through eBanking, including daily, weekly or monthly balance alerts, payment alerts and low balance alerts14.

For cash, Danske Bank customers can access a number of banking services at Post Office branches25. Through the bank's relationship with the Post Office, personal customers with a Debit Mastercard can withdraw and deposit cash and check their account balance at any Post Office in the UK25.

Branches remain part of the picture in Northern Ireland, and the bank has been changing its branch network. Four branches closed permanently in June 2024: Carrickfergus, Knock, Saintfield and Shipquay Place, with their external cash machines removed. A banking hub opened in Comber in January 2025, offering a Post Office counter service and Community Banker days for Barclays, Santander, Danske Bank and Ulster Bank.

How to apply or switch to Danske Freedom

You can apply online, in one of the bank's local branches, or enquire by telephone26. The online route needs your passport or full UK driving licence, and you take a selfie photo as part of the application1. If your application is successful and you have given the bank your mobile number and email address, it sends an email with the next steps, which can include signing digitally or posting documents for signing and return1.

If you already bank with Danske, you can open further accounts inside the Mobile Banking app: log on, tap the blue plus symbol, choose "Open an account", select the account type, read the agreement documentation and click "Read", then swipe "Sign now" to continue. You are then redirected to confirm the change via Danske ID or through your eSafeID device27.

Switching is done through the Current Account Switch Service. Danske Bank sets out the timeline as regular payments moved across on Day 3 to 5, and your balance moved and your old account closed on Day 71. The bank also states that you can switch to Danske from a bank or building society that is not a participant in the Current Account Switch Service, free of charge28. If you already hold a Danske Bank personal current account and want to switch an account held elsewhere, you can contact the bank to request a switching pack28.

To be eligible you must be a new Danske Bank personal current account customer and open a new Danske Reward, Danske Choice or Danske Freedom current account29. MoneyHelper has general guidance on how to open, switch or close a bank account if you want the wider picture before you start30.

Complaints, fraud help and FSCS protection

If something goes wrong, Danske Bank has a complaints process, and if you are unhappy with the bank's final decision you can refer the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which the bank describes as a free and independent service31. The ombudsman can look at complaints about bank accounts and bank cards, and about the way a financial business has dealt with a scam involving unauthorised payments, stolen details or identity theft32.

On card fraud, Danske Bank has a 24-hour reporting number and asks customers to contact it immediately if a card is lost or stolen. Cards can also be blocked and reordered through eBanking or the Mobile App at any time33. If fraud is suspected, the bank's card disputes page gives the number to call so it can help block the card, and a card can also be blocked using the Mobile Banking app or eBanking34. The bank's card agreement requires the account holder to be the sole user of the card and states it should never be out of their possession33.

On protection, Danske Bank accepts deposits, and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme covers deposits, current accounts and savings accounts35. The scheme protects you if your bank, building society or credit union runs into financial difficulty, and it is free to claim36. The FSCS has a check page you can use to confirm whether a particular brand is covered38.

Danske Bank's banking licence sits with Northern Bank Limited, which appears on the Bank of England's list of banks incorporated in the UK authorised to accept deposits39. The firm's FCA reference number is 122261, and its authorised status has been effective since 1 December 200135.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a monthly fee on the Danske Freedom account?

No. Danske Bank describes Freedom as flexible everyday banking with no monthly account fee. That is different from the Danske Reward account, which carries a monthly account fee, and from Danske Choice, which has no monthly account fee. Freedom is one of five personal current accounts Danske Bank offers, alongside Choice, Reward, Choice Plus and Prestige.

Can I open a Danske Freedom account if I live in England, Scotland or Wales?

Not as a new customer. Danske Bank states that if you are new to the bank you need to be a resident in Northern Ireland to open a Freedom account. If you are already a Danske Bank customer, the requirement is that you are a resident in the United Kingdom, so existing customers in England, Scotland and Wales can open one.

Will checking my overdraft eligibility affect my credit score?

Danske Bank says its overdraft eligibility tool uses a soft search, so it will not affect your credit score. The tool gives an initial indication of eligibility for an arranged overdraft based on the details you provide, and the bank states the result is not guaranteed. You will need the overdraft amount you want to check and your income and expenditure details.

What ID do I need to open a Danske Freedom account online?

Danske Bank states that as part of your application you will need your passport or full UK driving licence, and you will take a selfie photo. If your application is successful and you have given the bank your mobile number and email address, it sends an email with the next steps, which can include signing digitally or posting documents for signing and return.

How long does it take to switch my current account to Danske Bank?

Danske Bank sets out a Current Account Switch Service timeline in which your regular payments are moved across on Day 3 to 5, and your balance is moved and your old account closed on Day 7. The bank also says you can switch to it from a bank or building society that is not a participant in the Current Account Switch Service, free of charge.

How do I set my own contactless limit on my Danske debit card?

Danske Bank has allowed customers to set their own contactless transaction limit since 15 October 2021, changing it from £0 to £100 through the Mobile Banking app, by phone or in branch. The Freedom account comes with a Contactless Debit Mastercard. The bank's own pages carry the current limits and any changes to them.

Is my money in a Danske Freedom account protected?

Yes. Danske Bank is authorised to accept deposits, and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme covers deposits, current accounts and savings accounts. The scheme protects you if your bank, building society or credit union runs into financial difficulty, and it is free to claim. The FSCS check page confirms whether a particular brand is covered.

What happens to debts on a joint Freedom account?

Danske Bank states that all parties are jointly responsible for any debts incurred on the account, including overdrafts or debit balances. The bank also warns that a joint account links your financial records together, so a shared debt with someone with a poor credit history could make it harder for you to borrow money in future.
