Nationwide FlexDirect is a current account built around three rewards in the first year: in-credit interest, monthly cashback and an interest-free arranged overdraft. It has no monthly fee.
The rewards are conditional rather than automatic. The interest-free overdraft applies to the first 12 months, and Nationwide's own rate and charge figures for the account change from time to time, so the provider's site has today's figures1.
This page covers what FlexDirect offers, how each reward is earned, what it costs to use the card abroad, who can open one, how to apply or move an existing Nationwide account across, and what happens if something goes wrong.
What FlexDirect offers: interest, cashback and an interest-free overdraft
FlexDirect is a current account with in-credit interest and cashback for the first 12 months6. Three things sit alongside the everyday banking:
- Cashback on debit card spending and on Direct Debits, paid into the account on the last day of each month1.
- An arranged overdraft with the first £50 interest-free, for FlexDirect, FlexAccount and FlexPlus5.
Its wider first-year figure also counts a Fairer Share payment, if one is paid again and the customer is eligible4.
The rewards are time-limited. FlexDirect comes with access to in-credit interest and cashback for the first 12 months, and if you change it to a FlexAccount inside those 12 months you lose those offers7. The interest-free overdraft is also a first-year feature rather than a permanent one8.
How the in-credit interest works in the first year and after
Interest is worked out and paid into the account on the last day of each month, and Nationwide pays it without tax deducted1.
Two things follow from that. Second, the £75 figure assumes the account is funded at £1,500 throughout, so a balance that dips below that for part of the year produces less.
Interest is taxable even though no tax is taken off at source. It counts towards your Personal Savings Allowance, and you may owe tax if your savings income goes above your allowance. There is more on how that works, and who it affects, in interest on current accounts and how it is taxed.
The interest is not the only condition attached to the account. That is a funding requirement, not a fee: the money stays yours, but it has to arrive in the account each month.
How the monthly cashback is earned
FlexDirect pays cashback on two things, and both are paid into the account on the last day of each month1.
- Direct Debits: cashback on Direct Debits paid from the account, subject to the same monthly conditions1.
The qualifying conditions are specific. You must pay in £1,500 every month, and transfers from other Nationwide accounts and refunds do not count towards that total1. Nationwide also states that the cashback offer requires this to be your first FlexDirect in the last three years in your sole name, or with the same joint holder1.
The £60 card-spending figure and the £120 total are consistent if both the card spending and the Direct Debit elements are earned across the year, but the £60 figure is the one Nationwide attaches specifically to card spending1.
Cashback of this kind is a reward for using the account in a particular way, not a discount on a fee, because there is no monthly fee to offset. If you would rather see how reward accounts compare across the market, reward and cashback current accounts sets out the different models.
The switching bonus: who qualifies and how to claim it
Nationwide's switch offer is £175, and it applies to a new or existing FlexDirect, FlexAccount or FlexPlus9. The offer excludes switches from Nationwide and Virgin Money accounts4.
The conditions are cumulative:
- Switch to a new or existing FlexDirect, FlexAccount or FlexPlus9.
- Switch from a non-Nationwide or non-Virgin Money current account1.
- Complete a full switch using the Current Account Switch Service1.
- Have at least two Direct Debits on your old account1.
- Complete the switch within 28 days1.
- Pay in £1,000 and make one debit card payment within 31 days1.
- This must be the first time you have received a Nationwide switch offer on an eligible sole or joint account1.
There is a further restriction that catches longer-standing customers: you will not be eligible for the offer if you have previously held a Nationwide current account or received a switching offer from Nationwide since 20218. The offer period runs from 21 May 20268.
Meeting one set of conditions does not automatically meet the other1.
If a switch bonus does not arrive when you expect it, switch bonus not paid explains what to check and who to raise it with. The mechanics of moving accounts, including what happens to Direct Debits, are covered in the Current Account Switch Service.
Fees and charges, including spending and payments abroad
FlexDirect has no monthly fee3. That is the same for FlexAccount and FlexBasic, which Nationwide also lists as having no monthly fee1. It is different from a packaged account such as FlexPlus, which charges a monthly fee for bundled insurance and breakdown cover12.
The charges that do apply are transaction-based.
The FlexDirect debit card is listed differently on that page, under a "No fee" heading for foreign currency purchases13. The two Nationwide documents describe the position differently, and the charges document is dated December 20242. Because the figures and the treatment of the card abroad are exactly the kind of detail that changes, the provider's site has today's figures.
Other Nationwide current accounts handle this differently again: FlexStudent has no Nationwide fees for spending abroad or using an arranged overdraft, and FlexPlus has no Nationwide fees for using the card abroad14. If travel spending is the main reason you are choosing an account, debit cards and contactless payments covers how foreign transaction fees generally work.
Who can open a FlexDirect account
The eligibility rules are short, and one of them is the one people most often trip over.
- Be 18 or over1.
- Be a UK resident1.
- Agree the account is for personal use only1.
- Hold no more than three existing sole or joint Nationwide current accounts1.
- Not have held a FlexDirect account within the last three years, though exceptions apply4.
The three-year rule is the one to check first if you have banked with Nationwide before. It applies to FlexDirect specifically, and Nationwide notes that exceptions apply4. The cashback offer adds its own version of the same test: it must be your first FlexDirect in the last three years in your sole name, or with the same joint holder1.
Joint applicants should note that Nationwide allows two accounts per person in some circumstances, provided one is a joint account15. If you are opening a FlexDirect as a joint account, joint bank accounts explains how the account is held and what that means if circumstances change.
If you do not meet the FlexDirect conditions, Nationwide's FlexBasic is designed for people who either do not hold another UK current account or are not eligible for other Nationwide accounts11. Basic bank accounts explained covers that type of account more generally.
How to apply or change an existing Nationwide account to FlexDirect
You can apply online, by phone, or in person with support1. Nationwide's UK-based team handles phone applications, on 0800 121 6943 from the UK or +44 1793 65 67 89 from abroad, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm, closed Sundays and bank holidays1.
For the application itself you need your address history for the past three years and, if you have one, a valid UK passport or driving licence1. Applying without ID may mean being asked to come into a branch later to prove your identity11. Nationwide's own guidance on opening an account sets out the same documents16, and there is more on what counts as acceptable identification in what ID you need to open a bank account.
If you already hold a Nationwide current account, you do not need to open a separate one from scratch. You apply for the new account and tell Nationwide you already have an account with them, on the website or in the internet bank16. You can also start the change by logging into the app or internet bank, visiting a branch, or calling17.
Two practical points about changing account:
- If you already have an arranged overdraft with Nationwide, the same limit transfers when you change your account1.
- If you change a FlexPlus to a FlexDirect, you lose the FlexPlus benefits: worldwide family travel insurance, worldwide family mobile phone insurance, and UK and European breakdown cover. You can cancel the change within 28 days1.
Complaints, customer ratings and how your money is protected
Nationwide is a Which? Recommended Provider for current accounts8. Which? also records a customer score of 84% for Nationwide FlexDirect8. Those are independent assessments rather than Nationwide's own claims, and they sit alongside the account's own terms rather than replacing them.
On protection, money held with Nationwide is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if Nationwide is unable to meet its financial commitments or stops trading18. That protection is not unique to FlexDirect: it applies to the society's accounts generally18.
The Virgin Money position is worth understanding if you hold money with both brands. Virgin Money's business transferred to Nationwide on 2 April 2026, with accounts and products continuing under the Virgin Money name for now19. Before the transfer, separate protection was in place for Virgin Money and Nationwide deposits; after the transfer, protection is combined across both20. In practice that means money held with both brands counts together towards a single limit rather than two. Nationwide states that Virgin Money customers could be eligible for a Fairer Share payment in 202721. There is more on the transfer in Virgin Money accounts moving to Nationwide, and on how the limits work in is my current account protected?.
If something goes wrong, Nationwide's support line is available 24/7 to help protect your money and guide you through the next steps22. Complaints that are not resolved can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free and independent. If you are struggling with an overdraft rather than disputing a charge, struggling to repay an overdraft sets out the options, and free, impartial help is available from MoneyHelper.
