Virgin Money accounts moving to Nationwide

Virgin Money's business transferred to Nationwide on 2 April 2026, so your account is now a Nationwide account. What changed, what did not, which phone numbers to use, how switching works if you are overdrawn, and how long a scam refund takes.

Virgin Money accounts moving to Nationwide
Short answer

Virgin Money's business transferred to Nationwide on 2 April 2026, following Court approval on 23 February 20261. If you held a Virgin Money current account, savings account, mortgage or personal loan, it is now a Nationwide account. The transfer happened automatically: you did not have to apply, sign anything or move your money3.

What changed is mostly the name on the account and the terms that say who provides it. Virgin Money's own documents say the terms were updated to reflect Nationwide being the account provider, with no other changes to the terms as part of the transfer4. Your sort code, account number, Direct Debits, standing orders and payees stayed where they were.

What did not change is the protection. Up to £120,000 is protected in accounts with Virgin Money, and that continues after the account transfers to Nationwide6. Nationwide wrote to Virgin Money customers in November 2025 to explain what the transfer would mean for them7.

What the move to Nationwide means for Virgin Money customers

The legal mechanism was a transfer of Virgin Money's business to Nationwide, approved by the Court on 23 February 2026 and effective on 2 April 20261. In practice, for a customer, that means the account you opened with Virgin Money is now provided by Nationwide, and the paperwork that governs it says so.

Virgin Money's savings documents put it plainly: the terms were updated to reflect Nationwide being the account provider, and there were no other changes to the terms as part of the transfer4. The same wording appears in the personal loan documents5. So the interest rate, the notice period, the withdrawal conditions and the charges on an existing account did not change because of the transfer itself.

One thing that did change is membership. A Nationwide member is a customer with a mortgage, current account or savings account, and becoming a member depends on the kind of Virgin Money account or accounts you held when the transfer happened, together with your personal circumstances and status11. Membership is what carries voting rights at Nationwide's AGM and eligibility for the Fairer Share payment.

If you held a Virgin Money account and someone has since died, or you are dealing with an account as an executor, Virgin Money's transfer team handles those enquiries on the same number as everything else8.

Nationwide current accounts, mortgages and switching offers

Nationwide is a building society rather than a bank, which is why customers are members. It is the provider with the most branches remaining open across the country, with around 600 outlets still operating branches, and it has pledged not to leave any town or city in which it is based until at least 202813. Its own guidance puts the figure at 605 branches across the UK, and the two figures have not been reconciled13.

On current accounts, Nationwide offers a fee-free basic bank account, as do the largest banks including Virgin Money14. Its main current account range includes FlexPlus and FlexDirect, and it runs switching incentives from time to time. One recent offer required switching from a non-Nationwide or non-Virgin Money current account15. That condition matters for anyone arriving from Virgin Money: a Virgin Money account does not count as a qualifying switch for that particular offer.

On mortgages, Nationwide is described as the Which? Recommended Provider for mortgages in 2026, and will allow eligible applicants to borrow up to six times income, even at 95% loan to value16. It has also offered cashback deals on remortgages17. Cashback mortgages are worth reading carefully: the cashback is a one-off payment, and the rate attached to the deal is what you pay for the term.

Nationwide also works with Shelter to improve services for people at risk of homelessness, and is reviewing its non-standard ID policy to make it more inclusive18. That matters if you have no fixed address or unusual documentation.

Banking with Nationwide: branches, the app and ID checks

Nationwide runs branches, an app, online banking and phone banking. Around 600 branches remain open, the most of any provider, with a pledge not to leave any town or city in which it is based until at least 202813. Its own guidance gives 605 branches across the UK13.

The app is rated 4.8 out of 5 by customers in both the App Store and Google Play as of September 202619. It includes a feature for hiding abusive payment references: tap the eye icon to hide all payment references coming from that account20. That is designed for people receiving payments with a hostile or threatening reference attached.

For identification, Nationwide is reviewing its non-standard ID policy so that people without standard documents can still open an account18. Nationwide also offers a fee-free basic bank account, which is the route for anyone who cannot pass a full current account check14. Basic bank accounts are offered by the largest banks, including Virgin Money and Nationwide14.

If you are switching in from another provider, Nationwide's published position is that you may be able to switch while overdrawn if the amount you owe is within the arranged overdraft limit it is willing to offer you, and that if your existing overdraft is higher, your application may be declined21. Independent guidance warns that if you are currently overdrawn, you might not be able to switch bank accounts until you have paid off the overdraft22. The two positions differ, and the practical answer depends on the size of the overdraft and the provider's own limit.

Closing an account and moving your money

For most Virgin Money customers there is nothing to close. On the switch date, the balance, Direct Debits, standing orders and payees all moved over, and the Virgin Money account was closed10. That is what a full transfer of business does: the account does not sit alongside a new Nationwide one.

If you want to move to a different provider entirely, the Current Account Switch Service is the mechanism. You can ask your new provider to transfer your balance and all incoming and outgoing payments over23. You can switch using the Current Account Switch Service even if you are overdrawn24. Virgin Money is a member of the industry-wide Current Account Switch Service, so a switch away from it works the same way as any other25.

Cash ISAs are different. A cash ISA transfer is not part of the Current Account Switch Service, and moving one means using the ISA Transfer Service, which can be done online, by post and in branch26. If you hold a Virgin Money cash ISA, the account has transferred to Nationwide, but moving it elsewhere is a separate process with its own forms.

A transfer notification letter sets out the date the account moves and what the customer needs to do, which is usually nothing.

Scam refunds: 97% of cases fully reimbursed

Nationwide's published performance on authorised push payment (APP) scams is strong. For 2024 cases closed in 2024, before 7 October 2024, Nationwide fully reimbursed 97% of reported APP scam cases and partially reimbursed 2%10. By value, it refunded 85% of the total value of money its customers lost to APP scams in 202410.

Across the industry, the picture is lower. From 7 October 2024 to 31 March 2026, 88% (£316m) of the money lost to APP scams has been reimbursed to victims27. The Crime Survey for England and Wales for the year ending March 2025 found the victim was fully reimbursed in 70% of cases, covering 2.1 million incidents28. The gap between Nationwide's own figure and the industry-wide figures reflects different periods and different measures, and the two are not directly comparable.

On timing, Virgin Money's savings terms say that once a scam is confirmed, you will usually get your money back within five working days, and that investigations may take up to 35 days if the case is complex29. The same wording appears in the Help to Buy: ISA key features30. Those terms carried over with the accounts.

If you are worried about a call, hang up on unexpected calls, do not use a number the caller gives you, and call the number on the back of your card or call 15931. Nationwide's own research found the average person in the UK receives eight scam calls a month32.

Frequently asked questions

Will Virgin Money customers get the Nationwide Fairer Share payment?

Possibly, but not yet. Nationwide says that if you became a member as a result of the transfer, you could be eligible for a Fairer Share payment in 2027, and that qualifying Virgin Money accounts will be included. Membership depends on the kind of Virgin Money account you held when the transfer happened, along with your personal circumstances and status.

What phone number should Virgin Money customers use?

For anything to do with the transfer, Virgin Money's dedicated team is on 0800 066 5008, or 00 44 141 880 2050 from outside the UK, from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 3pm on Saturdays. You can also email nationwide-transfer@virginmoney.com or write to Nationwide Transfer, The team at Virgin Money, Sunderland, SR43 4JB.

Can I switch my current account while overdrawn?

You can use the Current Account Switch Service while overdrawn, and Nationwide says you may be able to switch if what you owe is within the arranged overdraft limit it is willing to offer you. If your existing overdraft is higher than that, your application may be declined. Some guidance warns that being overdrawn can hold a switch up until the overdraft is paid off.

How much cash can I pay into a Nationwide account each year?

A £20,000 limit on cash paid in each year across personal current and savings accounts took effect on 29 July 2026. That is a single annual limit covering your accounts together, not a limit per account.

How do I hide abusive payment references in the Nationwide app?

Nationwide's app has a feature for this. Tap the eye icon to hide all payment references coming from that account, so a reference someone sends with a payment is not displayed on your screen.

How long does Nationwide take to refund a scam claim?

Nationwide's own published figures for 2024 show it fully reimbursed 97% of reported authorised push payment scam cases and partially reimbursed 2%, and refunded 85% of the total value lost. Virgin Money's savings terms say you usually get your money back within five working days once a scam is confirmed, with investigations taking up to 35 days in complex cases.
