Monzo Aura: What It Offers and Who It Suits

Monzo Aura is a credit card that pays cashback and can invest it for you automatically. Here is what it includes, what it costs each month, who can apply, how the app works, and what happens if something goes wrong or you fall behind.

Monzo Aura: What It Offers and Who It Suits, with the Monzo logo

Monzo Aura is a credit card from Monzo that pays cashback on everyday spending and lets you send that cashback straight into investments instead of taking it as credit on the account. The card also includes an Apple TV subscription and a Google AI Plus subscription that comes with 2TB of cloud storage shareable with up to 5 people1.

You can also round up your spending and auto-invest the difference, topping up, withdrawing or opting out at any time1. Monzo says it will waive its usual platform fees on cashback that is invested, though the underlying fund management costs still apply1.

This page covers what the card offers, how the cashback and investing side works, who can apply, how the charges work, how to manage it in the app, spending abroad, what happens if you fall behind, and how disputes and complaints are handled. Monzo's own site carries today's figures for the card, including its current cashback rate and monthly fee.

What Monzo Aura is: a credit card with auto-invested cashback

Aura is a cashback credit card, which is a familiar category: cashback cards reward you by paying back a percentage of what you spend on the card, usually as credit on your card balance2. What makes Aura different is where the cashback can go. Instead of crediting cashback to your account, customers can choose to automatically invest it via their Monzo investment account1.

The card also lets customers round up their spending and auto-invest the difference, and they can top up, withdraw or opt out at any time1. That combination, a credit card whose reward is invested rather than spent, is the card's main selling point and the reason it is described as the first UK card to auto-invest cashback1.

The monthly fee buys more than the card itself. Aura includes an Apple TV subscription and a Google AI Plus subscription that comes with 2TB of cloud storage that can be shared with up to 5 people1. For a household already paying for those services separately, that changes the arithmetic of the monthly fee, though the fee is charged whether or not the subscriptions are used.

Aura sits alongside Monzo's other credit product, Monzo Flex, which is a separate way of spreading the cost of purchases rather than a cashback card. If you are weighing up reward cards generally, our guide to rewards and cashback credit cards sets out how the different structures compare, and types of credit card explains where cashback cards sit among the alternatives.

How the cashback and investing side works

Cashback on Monzo cards is earned on eligible transactions across a personal account, a joint account and the Flex Credit Card3. Monzo says there is no limit to how much cashback you can earn across all offers, though merchants may set maximum cashback limits per individual offer, so the offer details are worth checking3. Cashback is also earned when you check out using Apple Pay or Google Pay4.

Some cashback comes from partners rather than from Monzo itself. Where that is the case, Monzo may need to share your information with cashback partners so they can tailor offers to you, but only if you opt in to offers that come from those partners4. If you change your mind, you can opt back in at any time by going to Home and tapping the + button on the top right, then Cashback with Monzo5.

On Aura specifically, the cashback can be automatically invested via a Monzo investment account, or credited to the account instead1. Monzo will waive its usual platform fees for these investments, although underlying fund management costs will still apply1. That distinction matters: waiving the platform fee removes one layer of cost, but it does not make the investments free, because the funds themselves still charge for management.

Who can apply for Monzo Aura

Monzo's credit products generally require a Monzo current account. Monzo Flex states that you will need a Monzo current account to apply, that eligibility criteria and terms apply, and that it is for UK residents aged 18 or over6. Monzo's personal loans list a Monzo current account as a requirement alongside UK residency and age 18 or over, with eligibility criteria and terms applying7. Aura is a Monzo credit card, so the practical starting point is a Monzo current account, from which you can see what you are eligible for8.

Monzo's current account is open to UK residents aged 18 or over, and 18 to 69 for Max6. Opening one requires a mobile phone and a form of valid, in-date photo ID: passports, driving licences (a provisional licence is fine) and national ID cards are accepted, while CitizenCards are not7. The 16-17s account can be applied for by the young person on their own, with a valid photo ID, an email address set up on their device and their own mobile number7. The Under 16s account needs a parent or guardian account7, and additional family members need their own Monzo current account, to be closely related to the child and over 187. Monzo Flex, personal loans and home improvement loans all require a Monzo current account, with UK residents aged 18 or over for Flex and personal loans6.

Monzo's own site carries the current eligibility wording for Aura, including any age or residency conditions specific to the card. Because Aura launched on a gradual rollout, availability may be staged rather than immediate1.

The cashback balance and the choice between account credit and investing sit in the card's feed in the Monzo app.

How the charges work: interest, late payment and repaying early

Beyond that, the charges that apply to a credit card depend on how you use it. Independent guidance is clear that you will usually be charged for going over your credit limit, for using the card abroad and for late payments, and that the credit agreement sets out which other charges apply9. If you do not pay back all that you owe when payment is due, you may be charged interest10.

Monzo's own borrowing products give a sense of how the bank approaches repayment. On Monzo personal loans, Monzo states that if you are late in paying, it will not charge extra interest or fees11, and that you can make extra payments or pay the loan off completely with no extra fees12. Monzo also says you can pay a loan off in full before the end of its term without any early repayment fees13. Those are loan terms rather than card terms, and the card's own agreement governs Aura, but they show the bank's stated position on early repayment and late payment on its lending.

That position is not universal. Independent guidance notes that paying off a loan early normally attracts a fee of around one to two months' interest14, and that early repayment charges may apply on some borrowing15. Car loans are a common example, where payments are the same each month and there is a fee for repaying early16. On a credit card, the equivalent question is whether the card charges for clearing the balance early, which the card's terms answer.

Managing the card in the Monzo app

Monzo is an app-based bank, and the card is run from the app. You need to activate your Monzo card in the app17. New customers tap Activate My Card, and replacement cards are activated by tapping Activate new card underneath your Monzo card, or by swiping down on your list of payments if the button is not visible18.

Card details are found by tapping Card on the account you want the details for, and you enter your PIN or use Touch or Face ID to reveal the number19. If a card has not arrived, you can check its status by tapping Home, scrolling to the account the card was ordered for, tapping the Card tab to the right of your transaction feed, and scrolling to the Replacement section at the bottom20. The same Replacement section is where you order a new card: tap Home, tap the account you need, tap the Card tab, scroll to Replacement and choose the option to order a replacement21.

If a card is damaged or is not working when it arrives, Monzo covers the cost of the replacement17. Monzo also states that it will never charge for replacements where a card expires, is faulty, has been stolen, has been swallowed by an ATM or has been cancelled because of fraud concerns22.

If you find someone else's Monzo card, you can report it by tapping the Help icon at the bottom right of your Home screen, searching for "I've found someone's Monzo card", tapping Get in touch, and telling Monzo the name on the card and the last 4 digits of the long card number, but not the full card number23.

Spending abroad with Monzo cards

Monzo cards are accepted wherever Mastercard is accepted24. For card purchases abroad, Monzo says it passes on Mastercard's exchange rate without adding any extra fees24. On Monzo's paid current account plans, the fee for a debit card payment in a foreign currency is £025.

Getting a replacement card sent overseas is where costs appear. Monzo charges £30 per card sent outside the UK26. On Monzo's paid plans, the terms state that if you need a replacement card posted outside the UK, the international card delivery fee is charged in all circumstances27. Cards can also be delivered abroad by DHL air delivery for £3022.

There is a broader point about using any credit card abroad. Independent guidance warns that paying for foreign currency by credit card can mean not only a cash advance fee, but also a higher APR and no interest-free period, even if the bill is repaid in full and on time28. That applies to cash withdrawals and currency purchases rather than ordinary card spending, but it is the trap to know about. Our guide to using a credit card abroad covers the difference between spending and withdrawing, and withdrawing cash on a credit card explains why cash advances are treated differently.

If you struggle to repay: the financial difficulties support

Monzo asks customers who are struggling to keep up with repayments on money borrowed from Monzo to speak to its financial difficulties team29. It also says that if your health is affecting your finances and your ability to pay back money you have borrowed, it can help, through its Money Worries Hub29. On its loan pages, Monzo's message is to reach out as soon as possible so it can help11.

The consequences of falling behind are stated plainly on Monzo's borrowing pages: missed payments may negatively impact credit scores12, and being late or behind on payments might affect your credit file11. Independent guidance makes the same point about credit cards generally, and adds that you will usually be charged for late payments and for going over your limit9.

If you are behind on a credit card, the options are not limited to what the lender offers. Free, impartial help is available, and our guide to help with credit card debt sets out the routes, including the debt advice charities. Readers in Scotland have a separate set of options covered in credit card debt in Scotland, and readers in Northern Ireland in credit card debt in Northern Ireland. Missing a payment has its own consequences for promotional rates, explained in missing a payment on a promotional rate.

Fraud, disputes and complaints

If a transaction on the card is not right, the route is in the app. Go to your credit card feed, tap the transaction, scroll to the bottom to find the Something wrong? Get help button, then choose Report Fraud or Dispute the Transaction30. If you do not recognise the transaction, choose Report Fraud; if you have not received the products or services you paid for, or were overcharged or are expecting a refund, choose Dispute the Transaction30.

Monzo asks that you reach out to the retailer and wait two weeks for them to get back to you before progressing the claim30. Where a dispute becomes a chargeback, Monzo raises it with Mastercard, and chargeback applies only to card payments, not to transfers or direct debits31. Where a payment is suspected fraud, Monzo's guidance is to report it immediately32.

On authorised push payment fraud, Monzo says it will reimburse up to a maximum of £85,000, and that it may not pay the first £100 of a claim depending on personal circumstances33. If you are unhappy with the outcome, you can take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service33. Monzo also says it will never call and ask you to move money to a "safe account" or a "holding pen"33.

Monzo says it will acknowledge a complaint within 3 business days after receiving it, and that a final response generally takes between 15 days and 8 weeks depending on what the complaint is about34. The Financial Ombudsman Service is free to use if you are not getting help from the credit card company35, and consumers who feel they were given unaffordable credit, or that the lender acted irresponsibly in providing the product, may be able to complain to it36. In the first quarter of 2026/27 the ombudsman opened 5,783 complaints about credit cards, 129 about store card accounts and 62 about business credit cards37.

One fraud detail is worth knowing. Starling, Monzo and NatWest said that when they cancel a customer's card due to fraud, they fully opt its replacement out of ABU, a system that updates card details held by merchants38. That matters because a replacement card that is not updated can leave subscriptions and saved card details failing, and it is a deliberate fraud protection rather than an oversight.

Monzo also warns customers to avoid using public wifi to access mobile or online banking, noting that the majority of public wifi networks are not securely encrypted and are not private, that public wifi can let someone capture your PIN, passwords and view sensitive email or financial transactions, and that using mobile data on your 4G or 5G network is the safer route39.

Where your money is protected

Monzo is a bank, not just a card issuer. It is a fully regulated UK bank, and its eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme40. It appears on the Bank of England's list of banks incorporated in the UK authorised to accept deposits, as of 1 September 202641. The company is active on the Companies House register, company number 09446231, incorporated on 18 February 201542.

That matters for two reasons. First, deposits held with Monzo are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, which protects eligible deposits up to £120,000 per person40. Second, checking the firm against the register entry is how you confirm that the firm you are dealing with is the authorised one, which is the defence against clone firms using a real bank's name.

Credit card purchases carry their own protection. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act makes the card issuer jointly liable with the retailer for purchases over £100 and up to £30,000, and Monzo's own help pages explain how Section 75 claims work on its credit products30. Our guide to Section 75 sets out the thresholds and what falls outside them, and chargeback explains the scheme-based route that sits alongside it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Monzo current account to get Monzo Aura?

Monzo's credit products generally sit alongside a Monzo current account. Monzo Flex, for example, states that you need a Monzo current account to apply, and Monzo's personal loans list a Monzo current account as a requirement. Aura is a Monzo credit card, so the practical starting point is a Monzo current account, from which you can see what you are eligible for. Monzo's own site has the current eligibility wording for Aura.

Can I use the card if I don't have access to the Monzo app?

No. Monzo is an app-based bank and its cards are activated in the app: Monzo states that you need to activate your Monzo card in the app. Card details, replacements, freezing and disputes are all handled there too. If you cannot use a smartphone app, a Monzo card is unlikely to be workable, and a branch-based or telephone-based provider would suit better.

How do I freeze or replace a lost Monzo card?

In the app, tap Home, tap Card on the account you need a new card for, scroll to Replacement and tap Order new card, then follow the instructions. You can check a card's delivery status in the same Replacement section. Monzo covers the cost of a replacement if your card arrives damaged or is not working, and it does not charge for replacements where a card expires, is faulty, is stolen, is swallowed by an ATM or is cancelled over fraud concerns.

Will missing a credit card payment affect my credit score?

Yes. Monzo states on its borrowing pages that missed payments may negatively impact credit scores, and that being late or behind on payments might affect your credit file. Missing a payment can also mean losing a promotional rate on some cards. If you are struggling, Monzo asks customers to contact its financial difficulties team as soon as possible so it can help.

How do I dispute a card payment with Monzo?

Go to your credit card feed, tap the transaction, scroll to the bottom and use the Something wrong? Get help button. Choose Report Fraud if you do not recognise the transaction, or Dispute the Transaction if goods or services did not arrive, you were overcharged or you are waiting for a refund. Monzo asks that you contact the retailer first and allow two weeks for a reply before the claim progresses.

How long does Monzo take to respond to a complaint?

Monzo says it will acknowledge a complaint within 3 business days of receiving it, and that a final response generally takes between 15 days and 8 weeks depending on what the complaint is about. If you are unhappy with the outcome, you can take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free to use.

Can I take a complaint about Monzo to the Financial Ombudsman Service?

Yes. The Financial Ombudsman Service is free to use, and consumers who feel they were given unaffordable credit, or that a lender acted irresponsibly, may be able to complain to it. Monzo also tells customers that if they are unhappy with the outcome of a complaint they can take it to the ombudsman. In the first quarter of 2026/27 the ombudsman opened 5,783 complaints about credit cards.
