It is an app-first account: you need the Barclays or Barclaycard app to activate, use and manage it1.
There is a welcome offer running for new customers. The provider's site carries today's offer, including the amount and any qualifying date, along with the interest rate, any balance transfer fee and the representative APR.
This page covers what the card offers, how the rewards work, how interest and charges behave, who can apply, how to apply or switch, how to run the account in the app, the balance transfer restriction, and what to do when something goes wrong.
What the Amazon Barclaycard offers
The card is a reward credit card built around Amazon spending.
The card also carries a Barclaycard Entertainment benefit: 5% off selected events, 10% off presale tickets and savings on food and drink when you buy tickets through Barclaycard Entertainment2.
Because the offer can be pulled, the terms you are actually accepted on are the ones that matter, not the headline on the page you first read.
Reward credit cards generally work by giving you a certain number of points or a percentage of what you spend back each time you use the card4. This one is at the percentage end of that spectrum, and the reward is tied to one retailer's gift cards rather than paid as cash.
How rewards are earned and turned into Amazon gift cards
Rewards accrue as you spend, and the rate depends on where you spend. That is a permanent step down, not a promotional period ending, so the card's value to you changes after the first year.
Turning rewards into something you can spend works in fixed steps.
If you are weighing up whether the card is worth keeping, that change is the point to plan around.
That card is no longer the one on offer, but it shows how the reward mechanics have changed shape: points and thresholds then, a straight percentage now.
Interest, fees and charges: how they work
Beyond that, the interest rate, the representative APR and any balance transfer or money transfer fees are published on the provider's site, which carries today's figures; this page does not quote them because they change.
How interest behaves on a credit card is worth understanding before you apply, because the timing rules are not intuitive. On cash transactions, interest is paid from the date of the transaction, and likely fees such as cash transaction and cash machine fees apply on top5. That is different from purchases, where an interest-free period usually applies to the balance6.
Your balance is calculated from a combination of factors, including purchases, interest charges and fees7. So a card with a clean reward rate can still cost you if you carry a balance, and the reward percentage is small next to typical card interest.
Where you hold more than one kind of balance, providers apply an order of payments. Halifax, for example, sets out that where balances are not on introductory or promotional offers but have the same interest rate, it will usually pay them in this order: cash transactions plus interest, fees and charges; purchases plus interest, fees and charges; balance transfers and money transfers plus interest, fees and charges; then default fees8. The order matters because it decides which part of your debt shrinks first.
Barclays states that its fees and charges vary depending on the account and services you are using9, and that the charges and interest rates in its documents are variable10. In practice that means the figures you are accepted on can change, and the terms you agree to are the ones that govern.
Who can apply for an Amazon Barclaycard
You need to be 18 or over to access this product or service using the app1. Barclays says you are more likely to be approved if you have a personal income of more than £20,000 a year, and if you have been living permanently at a UK address for at least two years2.
Those are the stated markers rather than a guarantee. Approval depends on the usual credit assessment, and the eligibility check available through Amazon is designed to give you an indication before you commit to a full application.
The app requirement is a real condition, not a preference. This is an app-first account, and you will need the Barclays or Barclaycard app to activate, use and manage it1. Some parts of the account can be managed in Barclays Online Banking as well2. To use the Barclays app you must have a Barclays or Barclaycard account, have a mobile number and be aged 16 or over, and terms and conditions apply11. Barclays also states that you need to be 16 years old or older with a Barclays current account, mortgage account or Barclaycard to use the app12.
If you are not comfortable running a credit card through a phone app, that is the main practical obstacle with this card, and it is worth deciding before you apply rather than after.
Applying, or switching from another Barclaycard
Applications are made through Amazon's website or app, and you get a response within minutes2. The eligibility check you complete through Amazon does not affect your credit score2, which makes it a sensible first step if you are unsure.
If you already hold a Barclaycard, you do not have to run two cards side by side. Existing Barclaycard customers can apply to switch on Amazon's website or app, and if the switch is approved, Barclays closes your current Barclaycard straight away and transfers the balance to the new card2. That is a clean move, but it is also irreversible in the sense that the old account goes: if the card you are giving up had a feature you relied on, it is gone once the switch completes.
Once approved, Barclays sends the plastic card and PIN separately in the post within 9 working days2. Other Barclaycards quote around seven working days if you are approved13, so this card is slightly slower than some in the range. If you have the Barclays app, you can see your new card in 'Manage your cards' or 'Your cards' as soon as it has been sent16.
An app-first card: managing it in the Barclays or Barclaycard app
Everything about this card is designed to run through the app. You need the Barclays or Barclaycard app to activate, use and manage the account, and some parts can also be handled in Barclays Online Banking2. You can manage all your Barclays and Barclaycard accounts in the same app17.
Finding the card is straightforward. From the home page of the Barclaycard app, you select 'Your cards' and then your Amazon Barclaycard17. All the registered cards you hold with Barclays, both Barclays and Barclaycard, are displayed in the Your cards section18.
If you already use the Barclays app to manage another Barclays account, you can also use it to make payments to your Barclaycard once you have set up the bill payment in Barclays Online Banking and made your first payment17.
The app also handles the practical side of holding a card. If your card goes missing or you cannot find it, you can freeze it or report it as lost or stolen in the Barclays app19. If a cash machine captures your card, you can select 'Manage your cards' or 'Your cards', select the captured card, select 'Report damaged, lost or stolen', select 'stolen' and follow the instructions20. You can also link a debit or credit card to an Android or Apple device21, though Apple Pay specifically is not available on the Amazon Barclaycard1.
Balance transfers only from NewDay cards
The Amazon Barclaycard is not a general balance transfer card, and the restriction is specific. Barclaycard's balance transfer cards state that you can only transfer balances from cards issued by other banks, not from any other Barclaycard or any of its partner-branded cards14. That rule shapes what you can move onto a Barclaycard product.
If you are looking at a Barclaycard balance transfer deal, the timing rules matter too. Miss that window and the promotional rate does not apply to the transfer.
Balance transfer cards are a distinct product from a rewards card, and the two do different jobs. If your aim is to move existing card debt somewhere cheaper, a balance transfer credit card is the tool built for that, and the fees and promotional windows are set out on the provider's site. If your aim is to earn something back on spending you would do anyway, a rewards card is the tool for that. Trying to do both with one card usually means compromising on one of them.
Missed payments, fraud and complaints
Missing a payment on a credit card has consequences beyond the missed amount. Extra charges are added if you miss payments22, and missing a payment can also affect a promotional rate you are relying on. If you are struggling, free and impartial help is available from debt advice charities, and there are dedicated routes for help with credit card debt.
On fraud, the app is the first place to go. You can freeze a card or report it lost or stolen in the Barclays app19, and Barclays publishes guidance on card fraud12. If you have been tricked into authorising a payment yourself, that is a different situation from an unauthorised transaction, and the reimbursement rules for authorised push payments cover payments made using Faster Payments and CHAPS23.
If something goes wrong and you are not satisfied with the response, you can complain to the provider first and then take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. The ombudsman's own complaints data shows 5,783 credit card complaints opened in Q1 2026/2724, and 6,800 complaints about fraud and scams in Q1 2025/2625. Those figures give a sense of how often these disputes reach the ombudsman rather than being settled directly.
For missing rewards specifically, Barclays asks customers to log in to the Barclays app or Barclaycard app and go to the Barclays Cashback Rewards account, select the three dots and report missing cashback or a missing redemption26. On the e-gift card side, Barclays states you need to get in touch within 30 working days of trading up for the e-gift card, or it might not be able to help26.
Where the card sits and who stands behind it
The Amazon Barclaycard is issued by Barclays, and the brand most readers will recognise is Barclays. The legal entity behind the card is Barclays Bank UK PLC, which holds FCA reference number 75967627 and appears on the Bank of England's list of banks incorporated in the UK authorised to accept deposits, as of 1 September 202628. The company is active on the Companies House register, company number 09740322, incorporated on 19 August 201529.
That matters to a cardholder for one practical reason: deposits and certain claims are protected through the firm's authorisation, and knowing which firm holds the licence is how you check the FCA Register if you ever need to. The trading names registered to that firm include Barclays, Barclaycard, Barclays Premier Banking, Barclays Business Banking, Barclays Smart Investor, Barclays Wealth Management, Barclays UK and Europe, and Tesco Bank27.
Barclaycard was named a Which? Recommended Provider in the 2026 survey30. That is a service and satisfaction measure rather than a statement about any individual card, and it sits alongside the ombudsman's complaints data as a way of judging how the provider handles customers.
If you want to compare this card against the wider market, the rewards and cashback credit cards page sets out how these products work generally, and the credit cards section covers the full range of card types.
