The HSBC Premier Credit Card is a rewards credit card that only HSBC Premier current account customers can hold.
The card sits in a two-card Premier range. Both are Mastercards, and both are described by HSBC as exclusively for UK Premier account customers1.
The most important thing to understand before applying is the gate: HSBC states that its Premier Credit Cards are only available to HSBC Premier customers2. If you do not hold a Premier account, the card is not open to you, whatever your income or credit history. The rest of this page sets out what each card offers, what it costs, how the points work, and how to apply.
What the HSBC Premier Credit Card offers
The Premier Credit Card is a rewards card, which means it earns points as you spend rather than paying cashback directly into your account5. HSBC describes the card as giving travel benefits, rewards and HSBC Premier privileges with no annual fee, and as being just for Premier customers6.
The headline perks are travel-focused. You get access for the main cardholder and any additional cardholders to more than 1,700 airport lounges worldwide through Priority Pass, with lounges charging £24 per person per visit, subject to availability3. There is also a 10% discount on selected hotels booked with the card through Expedia7.
Alongside the card itself, holding a Premier account brings a wider package. HSBC says Premier customers can unlock up to £1,500 a year in travel and health benefits, including free worldwide travel insurance for the whole family, including dependents travelling with you up to age 23, preferential rates on foreign exchange and international payments, digital GP appointments, mental health support and second opinions through Square Health, and 24/7 chat or telephone support8. Those benefits attach to the account, not the card, but they are part of what a Premier customer is buying into.
That is a promotional arrangement rather than a general cashback rate, and it applies to selected products only.
Who can get an HSBC Premier Credit Card
The eligibility rule is short and absolute. HSBC states that its Premier Credit Cards are only available to HSBC Premier customers, and the card page repeats that it is just for Premier customers2. The same condition applies across the Premier range: the Premier Personal Loan requires you to hold an HSBC Premier Account, and the Premier World Elite Mastercard does too10.
That means the real question is not whether you qualify for the card, but whether you qualify for Premier. The Premier Bank Account has no monthly account fee, and HSBC describes it as giving access to retail offers and a Regular Saver Account12. The account is the gateway to the whole Premier range, including Premier Savings, which is available to Premier customers only13.
There are also limits on how many HSBC cards you can hold. HSBC says you can have a maximum of two HSBC UK credit cards, and that if you already hold one you can apply for a second, provided you have not opened a new HSBC credit card or received a credit limit increase within the past six months, and you are not applying for a card you already hold15.
How reward points are earned and what counts as eligible spend
Points accrue on eligible spending, and HSBC is specific about what does not count. Eligible spend excludes cash advances, fees, balance transfers, cheques, refunds, interest or any other charges3. In practice that means the everyday purchases you make on the card earn points, while the costs the card itself generates do not.
Points are not credited instantly. HSBC says points are awarded up to 60 days after the spend that earned them, and the same timing applies to bonus points6. If you are working towards a welcome bonus, that delay matters: the spend has to happen inside the qualifying window, but the points can land well after it.
There is also an anniversary bonus structure. That is a threshold rather than a rate, and it rewards cardholders who put a substantial share of their spending through the card.
Points do not last forever. HSBC states that if you earn points on an HSBC credit card, you have to redeem them within 3 years from the end of the calendar month in which you earned them4. Points that pass that date are lost, so it is worth checking your balance periodically rather than letting it build indefinitely.
Turning points into air miles, vouchers or charity donations
Points are only worth what you convert them into, and HSBC offers several routes. You can convert reward points into airline miles with British Airways, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Air India and more3. The Premier World Elite Mastercard lists British Airways, Asia Miles, Singapore Airlines and Etihad among its partners1.
Air miles themselves are a broad category. Experian explains that air miles can be exchanged for plane tickets and other travel-related purchases such as upgrades, priority boarding, lounge access, hotel bookings and car hire18. That is the general shape of what a mile is worth, and it is why the transfer partner list matters more than the raw points total.
Charity donation is the other route HSBC highlights. Every 1,500 points is worth £5 of support for charities around the world, including Age UK and British Heart Foundation7. That gives a fixed, published value to a block of points, which is useful if you want to compare what a redemption is actually worth to you.
For context on how these schemes vary, Which? reports that Tesco Clubcard points can be turned into two Virgin Points each, so £1.50 in Clubcard vouchers gets you 300 Virgin Points19. American Express, by comparison, lets members use Membership Rewards points towards purchases on the card, order gift cards and e-codes, transfer to travel and hotel loyalty programmes, or donate to charities such as Save the Children and Unicef20. The mechanics differ, but the principle is the same: points are a currency with its own exchange rates.
Travel benefits: airport lounges and hotel discounts
Lounge access is the clearest travel benefit on the Premier Credit Card. That is a pay-per-visit arrangement rather than free entry.
The Premier World Elite Mastercard changes that. HSBC describes unlimited access for the main cardholder and any additional cardholders to more than 1,700 airport lounges worldwide with Priority Pass11. Dragonpass, a separate lounge arrangement, is only available with the Premier World Elite Mastercard, not the Premier Credit Card21.
Hotel discounts sit alongside the lounge benefit. HSBC says cardholders receive a 10% discount on selected hotels booked with the HSBC Premier Credit Card through Expedia7. The discount applies to selected hotels, so it is not a blanket reduction on every booking.
For a sense of how these benefits compare across the market, Experian notes that high-limit credit cards tend to offer air miles, access to airport lounges, personal assistance services, travel insurance, hotel loyalty scheme membership, and theatre and concert tickets22. Which? These are the kinds of features that sit in this part of the market.
Fees and charges on the HSBC Premier Credit Card
The Premier Credit Card has no annual fee. That is the single biggest difference in cost between the two cards.
Spending abroad costs extra. HSBC's general guidance on using cards overseas notes that a non-sterling transaction fee may be charged when using the card abroad, and that an international transaction fee may still apply on debit cards23.
Other charges apply across the HSBC card range. On credit limits, HSBC says it no longer charges a fee for going over your credit limit, but notes that doing so could still damage your credit rating24. Balance transfer fees on the Premier Credit Card are set out in any offer made to you rather than as a standing figure25.
Premier Credit Card or Premier World Elite Mastercard: how the two differ
The two cards share a foundation: both are Mastercards, both require an HSBC Premier Account, and both earn reward points that convert into airline miles11. The differences are in cost and in the travel benefits that cost buys.
| Feature | Premier Credit Card | Premier World Elite Mastercard |
|---|---|---|
| Lounge access | More than 1,700 lounges, £24 per person per visit3 | Unlimited access to more than 1,700 lounges11 |
| Dragonpass | Not available21 | Available21 |
| Cashback offer | Not stated | Cashback equivalent to your first annual fee for new customers11 |
| Hotel discount | 10% on selected hotels via Expedia7 | 10% on selected hotels via Expedia1 |
The World Elite card's cashback offer is worth understanding. HSBC says new customers who open an HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard get cashback equivalent to their first annual fee, subject to eligibility and terms11. The offer runs from 27 July 2026 to 28 September 20261.
Which card suits which circumstance comes down to how much you travel and how you value lounge access. The Premier Credit Card costs nothing to hold and charges per lounge visit. Neither is a recommendation; the arithmetic depends on your own travel pattern.
How to apply and manage the card
Because the card is restricted to Premier customers, the practical route is: hold a Premier account first, then apply for the card. HSBC says that if you have an HSBC Premier Account and are registered for online banking, you can start your application right away, and that you can apply in the app, online or in branch3.
For the Premier account itself, HSBC says new customers can apply for a sole account in the app or online if they live in the UK, while joint accounts are arranged through a branch or by booking an appointment with the Premier team on 03457 404 404, with lines open 08:00 to 20:00 every day9. That is the entry point for anyone who does not already hold Premier.
Once you hold the card, management runs through the same channels as other HSBC products. HSBC's Premier Savings account, for example, can be opened via the mobile app, online banking or in branch, and managed through online banking, the HSBC Mobile Banking app, Telephone Banking or in branch, where you can chat 24/713. The card itself is managed in the app and online banking alongside your current account.
Applying triggers a credit check. HSBC states that if you apply, it will do a full credit check6. That is standard for a credit card application and it means the search will appear on your credit file.
Purchase protection and keeping your card safe
Paying by credit card brings statutory protection that debit cards and cash do not. Independent Age notes that you might have more protection if you have paid for something with a credit card28. Which? makes the same point for overseas retailers, saying it is always best to pay via credit card so that you have extra protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act29. Our guide to Section 75 explains how that works and where it stops.
The card itself has security features. HSBC says all its credit cards are contactless and can be used with a digital wallet, including Apple Pay or Google Pay3. HSBC also states that you are 100% protected against fraud on contactless payments, just as you are with Chip and PIN payments30.
Your side of the bargain matters. HSBC says you must take all reasonable precautions to keep your details safe and prevent any unauthorised use of any cards and security details31. Take Five, the national fraud prevention campaign, advises keeping your card safe and shielding your PIN whenever you enter it32.
If something does go wrong, there is free help. Independent Age sets out what to do if you have been the victim of a scam28. Our guides to credit card fraud and unauthorised payments and complaining about a credit card provider cover the next steps, including the Financial Ombudsman Service.
