Monzo Flex is a way to split card purchases into instalments, built into the Monzo app rather than run as a separate card account. You choose a plan when you spend, or afterwards, and repay over a set number of months.
It is a credit product, not a debit feature. The Government's own policy statement on these products names Monzo alongside Zilch as a notable provider of instalment plans offered within running account credit agreements, which is the regulatory category Flex sits in1. That matters because it means Flex is regulated credit: what you borrow is reported to credit reference agencies, and missing payments can affect your credit file.
You need a Monzo current account to apply, you must be a UK resident and aged 18 or over, and you apply inside the app2. Monzo's own site carries today's rates, fees and terms, so check there for the current figures before you commit to a plan.
What Monzo Flex is and who it is for
Flex is designed for people who already bank with Monzo and want to spread the cost of card spending without taking out a separate loan. Because it sits inside the current account app, there is no second card to manage and no separate login. You see your plans alongside your balance.
It suits two broad situations. The second is ongoing card spending you want to convert into instalments after the fact, which is where the interest-bearing plans come in.
It is not a replacement for a current account, and it is not a standalone credit card in the traditional sense. Monzo also offers a Monzo Flex Credit Card, and current account holders can see whether they are eligible when they sign up for a current account4. If you are weighing up whether an instalment plan or a conventional card suits you better, our guide to cardless credit and app-based credit lines sets out how these products differ from a standard card.
Flex is one of several borrowing options inside Monzo. The bank also offers personal loans, which require a Monzo current account, and overdrafts, where Monzo checks your credit file with a soft search that lenders cannot see and that does not affect your chances of getting credit5. Flex sits between the two: more structured than an overdraft, more flexible than a fixed loan.
How it works
The mechanics are simple. You spend on your Monzo card, then choose how to repay. Monzo describes Flex as offering instalment plans, and the plans are managed entirely in the app, so there is no paperwork and no phone call.
If Monzo asks you for a deposit when you open Flex, that money is set aside rather than spent. Monzo states that it will set your deposit aside so the money stays locked away6. Not everyone needs to put down a deposit: Monzo says not everyone needs to put down a deposit to open Flex, and the decision depends on your circumstances7.
You can add to the deposit later if you want to. The steps Monzo gives are to tap top up, choose where you would like to move the money from, enter the amount and tap move money8. The deposit can also be used if you fall behind: Monzo's instructions are to tap your Flex card, tap catch up on missed payment, choose whether to catch up on the missed payment or switch to minimum payment, then tap the toggle to use your deposit8.
You get the deposit back if you keep up with your monthly Flex payments and other borrowing, and keep your deposit topped up6. That condition matters: the deposit is returned on the basis of your repayment behaviour, not automatically.
How the fees and charges work
Monzo's headline position on charges is deliberately narrow. The company states that Flex has no fees overseas and no extra charges for missed payments2. It also says you can make repayments early or pay extra whenever you want, with no fees, and that it does not charge late fees9.
That does not mean Flex is free in every case. Monzo's own site carries today's figures for both the plans and any interest charged, so that is where to check the current position rather than relying on a general description.
The wider Monzo pricing structure is worth understanding because Flex sits inside it. The current account itself is free to open3. Those plans bring benefits that sit alongside Flex rather than changing it: Monzo Perks includes 3 fee-free cash deposits every month, and Monzo Plus includes 1 fee-free cash deposit a month10. Monzo also advertises discounted investment fees on its plans12.
If you hold a paid plan and are finding payments difficult, Monzo's guidance is to get in touch right away if you are having financial difficulties, and to reach out in the app chat for further support if you are unable to pay13. Monzo Premium customers who want to reduce their costs can move to Extra, Perks or Max14.
Who can apply and how to apply
The eligibility rules are short. You need a Monzo current account to apply for Flex, you must be a UK resident, and you must be 18 or over. Eligibility criteria and terms and conditions apply2. Monzo states that if you have a current account, you can apply in the Monzo app2.
Opening the underlying current account is quick. Monzo says it takes just 10 minutes to apply for a free Monzo current account15, and elsewhere that it only takes 10 minutes to apply16. The account is opened electronically rather than by post, and Monzo confirms that accounts can be opened without visiting a branch17.
If you are moving from another bank, Monzo supports the Current Account Switch Service, which closes your main current account and moves everything over2. Monzo says it will do the rest in 7 working days, and that you can switch personal, joint and business accounts18.
A few practical points about applying:
- You apply inside the app, not on a website form2.
- You need the current account first; Flex is not available on its own2.
- Monzo runs a soft search when assessing some borrowing, which shows on your credit report as a quotation search or administration review and does not affect your chances of getting credit5.
- Not everyone is accepted, and not everyone who is accepted needs a deposit7.
How your money is protected
Monzo is a fully regulated UK bank, and eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme19. That covers eligible deposits including Savings Pots and Cash ISA Pots, and Under 16s accounts also carry FSCS protection20.
For purchases, Monzo states that Flex comes with Section 75 protection for eligible purchases2. Section 75 makes the card provider jointly liable with the retailer when something goes wrong, but it only covers eligible purchases, so it is not a blanket guarantee.
The deposit you pay when opening Flex is treated differently from a normal balance. Monzo says that if you put down a deposit when you open Flex, it will set it aside so the money stays locked away6. It is returned if you keep up with your monthly Flex payments and other borrowing and keep the deposit topped up6.
Monzo also builds in security features around the account. Online purchases are approved with a two-step verification called 3D Secure, biometrics can be used every time you access the app, and the bank runs an industry-first Call Status feature that lets you check in the app whether a caller claiming to be from Monzo is genuine19. Monzo says that feature helps prevent around 1000 fraud attempts a month22.
Problems, complaints and getting help
The first thing to know is what happens if a payment is missed. Monzo says it will give you 7 days to catch up from the date of your missed payment, and that it charges no extra fees for missed payments2. Missing a payment can still be recorded on your credit file, because Monzo reports your repayment history to credit reference agencies, and using credit responsibly and paying back on time can help improve your credit score2.
If you are struggling, Monzo's own guidance is to get in touch right away if you are having financial difficulties, and to reach out in the app chat for further support if you are unable to pay13. Monzo says the best way to discuss your circumstances is via in-app chat with a financial difficulties specialist24. Support through the in-app chat is available 24/725.
For fraud and scams, Monzo asks customers to report the payment as potential fraud through the app26. The route it gives is to tap Help on the bottom right of the app, search for "Reporting a scam", tap the help article and then "Report Fraud" and complete the steps in the form27. If you get a call from someone claiming to be Monzo, the bank's advice is to open the Monzo app, because if Monzo actually needs to speak with you, you will see a notification there28.
On authorised push payment fraud, where you are tricked into sending money yourself, Monzo says it will reimburse eligible claims up to a maximum of £85,000, within 5 business days, or up to 35 business days for more complex cases29. Monzo states that if it reimburses you, it may not pay the first £100 of your claim29. If you are unhappy with the outcome, Monzo says you can take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service29.
A few other practical points:
- Monzo has no branches, and banking is done through the app19.
- Cheques up to £500 can be paid in via mobile banking; cheques above £500 must be sent in by post17.
- Cancelling a cheque is not possible by telephone, internet or mobile banking17.
- Monzo provides 24/7 service on all of its listed activities for urgent queries17.
