NFU Mutual Bespoke home insurance is a policy designed for high-value homes, estates and manor houses. It is aimed at homes with contents worth more than £150,000, and it bundles in cover that standard policies usually sell as optional extras: fine art and antiques cover, personal cyber cover, home emergency cover and personal legal expenses1.
The policy is sold by NFU Mutual, a UK mutual insurer that has been trading for over 115 years and has a network of more than 280 local agency offices3. It is not sold through price comparison websites, so quotes come directly from NFU Mutual4.
If your home and contents are worth less than the Bespoke threshold, NFU Mutual's standard home insurance may be the more suitable product. Bespoke is the high-value tier, and the differences are in what comes included, the limits that apply and the way valuations are handled.
What it is and who it is for
NFU Mutual Bespoke Home Insurance is a home insurance policy built for properties where a standard policy's limits would not go far enough. NFU Mutual describes it as "specially designed to cover high-value homes, estates and manor houses"5. The eligibility line is contents worth more than £150,0001.
That threshold matters because it shapes who the policy suits. A home with a significant art collection, antique furniture, jewellery or watches is likely to need higher single-item limits than a standard contents policy provides. NFU Mutual's own guidance notes that it, like other insurers, applies an unspecified single item limit on home insurance policies, which is the cap on what it will pay for any one item unless that item is listed separately8. Bespoke is aimed at the kind of home where that cap would bite.
The policy also suits homes where the buildings themselves are unusual: listed properties, period houses, estate buildings and homes with outbuildings. NFU Mutual's standard home insurance can be bought as buildings cover, contents cover or, most commonly, both together as a combined policy9. Bespoke follows the same structure but with the higher-value features included.
NFU Mutual holds Which? Recommended Provider status for Home Insurance, and its Home Insurance contents cover carries a customer score of 76%3. Those are independent assessments of the standard and Bespoke ranges, not a ranking of one against the other.
How it works
Bespoke works like other home insurance policies in structure: you insure the buildings, the contents, or both, and you pay a premium for the cover you choose. What differs is what comes included and how the sums insured are set.
When you get a quote, NFU Mutual will ask you to estimate the value of your home contents4. For buildings cover, it will ask you to estimate how much it would cost to rebuild your home in the event of a claim, and it provides tools to help with that calculation2. Getting these figures right matters: NFU Mutual states that it will not pay more than the sum insured, and that it may not pay the full amount of a claim even if the claim is less than the total sum insured8.
For high-value items, NFU Mutual works with valuation partners. It says it works with "carefully selected and trusted valuation partners", giving reassurance that valuable possessions are properly valued4. It also works with trusted partners who can, for a fee, provide a valuation for your collections5.
Bespoke includes personal cyber cover as standard, which is unusual for a home policy. It covers up to £50,000 in any one period of cover, and includes unlimited access to a Cyber Assistance Helpline for both preventative advice and incidents1. NFU Mutual also publishes general guidance on protecting personal information and keeping finances safe11.
Home emergency cover is included as standard, up to £1,500 per claim6. That is higher than the optional home emergency cover available on NFU Mutual's standard home insurance, which is up to £1,000 per claim12. The Bespoke version also removes the seven-day waiting period that applies to the standard home emergency product6.
How the fees and charges work
NFU Mutual does not charge an administration fee when you make adjustments to your Bespoke policy or if you cancel it1. That applies across its home insurance range, and Which? notes that NFU Mutual does not charge admin fees for adjusting a policy, paying in monthly instalments or cancelling early13.
If you choose to pay monthly by Direct Debit, NFU Mutual does not charge extra: no fees and no interest14. That is a meaningful difference from many insurers, where paying monthly adds a credit charge. The premium itself depends on your home, its contents, its location and the cover you choose, and NFU Mutual's site has today's figures.
The costs that do apply are the ones built into any home insurance policy:
- The premium, set by the risk your home presents and the sums insured you choose.
- The excess, which is the amount you pay towards a claim. Bespoke's exclusions list includes "any excess"1.
- Valuation fees, if you use NFU Mutual's valuation partners to value a collection. NFU Mutual states these partners can provide a valuation "for a fee"5.
NFU Mutual rewards loyalty through Mutual Bonus, a saving when you renew a general insurance policy15. That is a renewal discount rather than a fee, and it applies across its general insurance products.
Who can apply and how to apply
Bespoke is designed for high-value homes with contents over £150,0001. If your contents are below that, NFU Mutual's standard home insurance is the relevant product, and it can be bought as buildings cover, contents cover or a combined policy9.
To get a quote, you contact NFU Mutual directly. It is not listed on price comparison websites, and its guidance states: "You won't find us on price comparison websites, so speak to us to get a quote"4. Quotes are available through its UK-based contact centre, Mutual Direct, or through a local agency office16.
The application process involves estimating your contents value and, for buildings cover, your rebuild cost. NFU Mutual provides guides and tools to help with these calculations4. For high-value items, you may want a professional valuation, which NFU Mutual can arrange through its partners for a fee5.
Add-on covers are available to home contents policyholders, including dog and cat insurance, homeworker insurance, smallholder insurance and travel insurance1. These can be added to a home contents insurance policy, but they are only available if you are taking out a new home buildings or contents policy, or adding to an existing one12.
If you already have home insurance elsewhere and are considering switching, the practical steps are the same as for any home policy: get a quote, check the sums insured are right, check what is included and excluded, and time the switch so you are not left without cover. NFU Mutual's existing customers can make policy changes, including adding or removing covers, in the Online Account or by phone17.
How your money is protected
NFU Mutual's home insurance provides protection tailored to your needs, and its Bespoke policy is designed for high value homes with contents over £150,00018. The Bespoke policy is aimed at high-value homes, estates and manor houses, and the firm works with carefully selected and trusted valuation partners11.
For a consumer, the practical protection is this: NFU Mutual's home insurance is a contract of insurance, and the Bespoke policy is designed for high value homes with contents over £150,00018. If the firm were to fail, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme would apply, and the rules on what happens if your insurer goes bust are set out separately.
The policy itself carries several protections worth knowing about:
- Fine art, antiques and collections are covered as standard up to £10,000 in total and per item, pair or set5.
- Valuables including jewellery and watches are covered up to £10,000 for each item, pair or set, and up to £10,000 in total1.
- Personal cyber cover is included up to £50,000 in any one period of cover1.
- Home emergency cover is included up to £1,500 per claim6.
- Personal legal expenses cover is included up to £150,000 for any one claim, administered by ARAG UK, with a 24-hour advice helpline1.
- Replacement of locks on outside doors, safes and alarm systems if your keys are lost or stolen1.
The policy also includes cover for contents kept in your garden9. NFU Mutual notes that contents are only insured when inside the home or garden, and that cover outside requires adding the relevant cover to the policy8.
Where protection stops is in the exclusions. NFU Mutual lists damage or loss caused by lack of general maintenance, wear and tear, and loss of value over time; costs above the amount insured; storm or flood damage to gates or fences; home emergency claims for gradual processes such as dripping taps; items permanently kept away from the policy address; personal cyber claims relating to business or profession; and any excess1.
"Damage or loss caused by lack of general maintenance, wear and tear, and loss of value over time."
Problems, complaints and getting help
If something goes wrong, the first step is to contact where you bought the policy. NFU Mutual states: "This will be our UK-based contact centre Mutual Direct or an agency"16. Which one holds your policy is on the front page of your policy schedule16.
For claims, the route depends on how you bought the policy. If you bought it over the phone, contact Mutual Direct. If you bought it through a local agency office, contact that office16. For home emergency claims, there is a 24-hour claims helpline, and an approved tradesperson will be sent to fix the problem6.
NFU Mutual encourages members to raise concerns early. Its guidance states: "If all has not gone as you had expected we actively encourage all our members to let us know, again by phone, e-mail or letter"19. If a complaint is not resolved to your satisfaction, the Financial Ombudsman Service can look at it, and the rules on how long an insurer has to respond to a complaint apply.
For complex claims, NFU Mutual may appoint a loss adjuster to assess the damage, explain the next steps and support you throughout the claim20. For storm damage, it may offer a cash settlement, help obtaining quotations from local contractors, or repairs through an approved contractor network20. For subsidence claims, investigations can include drain testing, trial holes, monitoring movement and measuring cracks, and repairs can normally begin once the cause of movement has been addressed and the property is considered stable21.
NFU Mutual also offers additional support for customers with communication preferences, disabilities, health conditions, caring responsibilities or who require additional support20.
