NFU Mutual

NFU Mutual is a mutual insurer best known for farm and rural cover, but it also sells home, car, life and business insurance plus pensions and investments through its own financial advisers. Here you can find out what it offers, how buying through its local agency offices works instead of comparison sites, how to claim and complain, and who provides the cover behind its policies.

NFU Mutual logo

NFU Mutual is a mutual insurer: it has no shareholders, and it describes its approach as built around mutuality, working in the interests of its customers. The society behind the brand was incorporated on 30 September 1910 and is still an active company, and NFU Mutual says it has over 115 years of insurance knowledge, with its roots in farming1. Today it sells far more than farm cover: home insurance, car insurance, farm and agricultural vehicle policies, business cover, life cover and a range of pensions and investments sold through its own financial advisers3.

What marks NFU Mutual out from most high-street insurers is how you buy from it. Its policies are not listed on price comparison websites, and quotes come either from its UK-based call centre, Mutual Direct, or from a network of over 280 local agency offices offering a face-to-face service2. That suits some buyers and not others: you get a conversation about your circumstances rather than a quick online price, but you cannot line NFU Mutual up against other insurers on a comparison table.

What NFU Mutual offers: home, car, farm and rural insurance

A typical NFU Mutual agency office: the local, face-to-face route that has defined the brand since 1910.

NFU Mutual's product range spans general insurance, life cover and long-term savings. On the general insurance side, its home insurance can be bought as buildings cover, contents cover or, most commonly, both together as a combined policy3. Its car insurance comes in three types: comprehensive, third-party fire and theft, and third-party only4. It also covers motorhomes and campervans through its comprehensive car policy, including European cover for campervans11.

The rural specialism remains central. Farm insurance comes in tiers such as Farm Essentials and Farm Select, with cover that can be tailored to all types of farming business, from share farming agreements to limited companies with multiple holdings5. Around the farm policies sit specialist products: agricultural vehicle and trailer insurance, and equine insurance with optional cover for tack, horse trailers and horse-drawn vehicles2. NFU Mutual also funds the Farm Safety Foundation, a registered charity that raises awareness of farm safety among younger farmers5.

On the financial side, NFU Mutual has been providing financial services to customers for over 95 years7. It offers life cover and protection products, and a range of investment products including ISAs, a pension, an investment bond and a Select Investment Plan, some of which are available for a child6. Financial advice across these products is provided by NFU Mutual's financial advice arm, with advisers across the UK10.

Home insurance: what the cover includes and where it stops

NFU Mutual home insurance is sold as buildings insurance, contents insurance or a combined policy3. Its standard home cover includes a set of features many insurers charge extra for: alternative accommodation for you, your family and your domestic pets if the home cannot be lived in, replacement of locks for outside doors or safes and keys to the alarm system if lost or stolen, contents kept in your garden, theft from outbuildings, and replacement of contents new for old14. Buildings cover includes accidental damage to fixed glass, ceramic hobs and bathroom fixtures as standard, and the brand holds Which? Recommended Provider status for home insurance15.

Where the cover stops matters just as much. Contents are only insured when they are inside your home or garden: cover for possessions taken outside the home, such as a laptop or jewellery, has to be added to the policy16. NFU Mutual, like other insurers, also applies an unspecified single item limit, so valuables above that limit need to be listed individually, and it warns that it will not pay more than the sum insured, and may not pay the full amount of a claim even if the claim is less than the total sum insured16. Under-insurance is the classic trap with contents cover, so NFU Mutual provides guides and tools to help you estimate the value of your home contents when you get a quote17.

Optional add-ons include home emergency cover, administered by ARAG plc on behalf of NFU Mutual, and personal legal expenses cover14. Add-on covers are only available if you are taking out a new buildings or contents policy or adding them to an existing one3. For high-value homes, the separate NFU Mutual Bespoke range adds covers such as personal cyber cover and insurance for fine art, antiques and collections, where NFU Mutual works with trusted partners who can, for a fee, provide a valuation19. Which? gives the Bespoke policies its top rating for both buildings and contents cover20.

Car insurance: courtesy cars, glass repairs and RAC breakdown cover

NFU Mutual car insurance offers the three standard levels of cover, and comprehensive policies carry a set of features aimed at keeping you moving after an incident4. A small courtesy car in the UK is provided for the duration of repairs carried out by NFU Mutual's recommended repairers, or for up to 14 days if your car is written off or stolen4. Repairs through the recommended repairer scheme come with a lifetime guarantee, for as long as you own the vehicle, from British Standard accredited bodyshops, with manufacturer repairers used when required21. Theft or damage to child car seats is covered, and electric and hybrid vehicles are covered with charging cables included as standard4.

Glass cover is a standout feature. NFU Mutual covers damage to windscreens (front and rear), windows and sunroofs, and a windscreen replacement can include recalibration of ADAS, the advanced driver assistance systems, where needed23. A glass claim does not reduce your no claims discount, glass repairs carry no excess, and the only charges on a replacement are your glass replacement excess and VAT if you are registered for VAT23. Approved glass suppliers are Allscreens Nationwide, National Windscreens and Auto Windscreens23.

Breakdown cover is included rather than bolted on: Mutual Assist, provided by the RAC, comes as standard with motor insurance, and can be upgraded to include at-home cover and recovery to any destination in the UK21. The standard cover has conditions: it applies to UK breakdowns at least a quarter of a mile from home with total recovery distance under 20 miles, and it excludes motorhomes, campervans and any vehicle with a gross weight of 3500kg or over or a length greater than 6.4 metres21. Other exclusions include loss of value over time, damage to tyres and wear and tear, and personal possessions not kept in a locked vehicle, boot or glove compartment21.

If you are hit by an uninsured driver, NFU Mutual protects your no claims discount and waives the excess, provided you can supply the uninsured driver's details, vehicle details and any independent witnesses25. Multiple cars can be insured at the same time on one NFU Mutual policy25.

Farm and agricultural vehicle insurance

Farm insurance is the product NFU Mutual was built on, and it remains the reference point for the sector. Policies come in tiers: Farm Essentials and Farm Select, with Farm Select applied for through your local NFU Mutual agency office, which offers face-to-face advice for all your farming needs5. NFU Mutual states that over 95% of its farming policies renew each year, based on policy renewals for the three years ending September 20255. Cover can be tailored to all types of farming business, from share farming agreements to limited companies with multiple holdings12.

One boundary to understand: cover for damage to agricultural vehicles is not included in Farm Essentials or Farm Select. It needs the specialist Agricultural Vehicle Insurance policy5. Under that policy, agricultural trailers are covered, whether attached or detached, along with legal liability for injuries to others and damage to other people's property, tree felling and tree haulage on your own land, and agricultural goods and accessories carried in your trailer, each subject to the limits set out in your policy documents2. Any excess, the amount you pay towards a claim, applies as outlined in your policy documents2.

Alongside the core farm policies sit products for the wider rural economy: Luckpenny insurance for young farmers starting out, and horse insurance with optional cover for tack, horse trailers and horse-drawn vehicles26. NFU Mutual also funds the Farm Safety Foundation, an award-winning registered charity raising awareness of farm safety among younger farmers aged 16 to 405.

Pensions, ISAs and investments through NFU Mutual Financial Advisers

NFU Mutual's savings and investment business is advice-led rather than online-led. Its product range includes ISAs, a pension, an investment bond and a Select Investment Plan, some of which are available for a child, and regular investing is possible through products such as an ISA or a pension set up for you or your child7. Financial advice is provided by NFU Mutual's financial advice arm, and NFU Mutual Financial Advisers, who are based across the UK, advise on NFU Mutual products and selected products from specialist providers10.

On the pension side, NFU Mutual helps with building a pension pot and with turning it into income, including access to a panel of annuity providers made up of companies NFU Mutual says it knows and trusts28. Holders of a Select Pension Plan, Personal Pension Account or Stakeholder Pension Plan can pay into their pension online29. The Select ISA, for example, lets you invest in a number of NFU Mutual funds and selected funds from other providers30.

You can book an appointment with an NFU Mutual Financial Adviser by calling 0800 622 32327. 'Select' products can be monitored through the 'My Investments' online platform, where you can view performance and transaction records7. The standard investment warning applies, in NFU Mutual's own words:

"the value of your investment and any income from it may go down and you may get back less than you invested." NFU Mutual7

No admin fees, and a Mutual Bonus on renewal

NFU Mutual's charging structure is unusual among insurers for what it does not charge. The provider states it does not charge an administration fee when you make adjustments to or cancel your policy, and it will not charge you extra for paying monthly by Direct Debit, with no fees or interest25. An independent review confirms NFU Mutual does not charge admin fees for adjusting your policy, paying in monthly instalments or cancelling early20. Many insurers charge for mid-term changes, instalments and cancellations, so this difference is worth weighing when comparing prices: a cheaper headline premium elsewhere can be eroded by fees NFU Mutual does not levy.

Loyalty is rewarded through Mutual Bonus, a saving when you renew a general insurance policy31. NFU Mutual frames this as part of its mutual structure: with no shareholders, it says it works in the interests of its customers2. The size of any saving is set by NFU Mutual and can change, so the current position is set out in the renewal terms on its own site.

One condition to note on the home side: optional add-on covers are only available if you are taking out a new buildings or contents policy or adding them to an existing policy3.

Buying a policy: local agency offices, not comparison sites

You will not find NFU Mutual on price comparison websites32. There are two ways to get a quote: through Mutual Direct, NFU Mutual's UK-based call centre, or from one of its over 280 local agency offices, which offer a personal, face-to-face service4. If you already hold a policy, the policy number tells you where it came from: if it ends in 'N19' you bought from Mutual Direct, and if not, you bought from an agency office33.

Whether this suits you depends on what you want from insurance. MoneyHelper, the government-backed money guidance service, notes that the policies offered on comparison websites tend to be fairly generic, so for cover that meets individual needs, speaking to a provider or broker directly is an alternative route34. NFU Mutual's strength is tailored cover: farms, high-value homes, classic campervans, where a standard comparison-site policy may not fit. The trade-off is convenience: you cannot compare its price against rivals in one place, and getting a quote takes a phone call or an office visit rather than a few clicks.

Making a claim with NFU Mutual

NFU Mutual's claims process starts the same way whatever the policy: contact the insurer as soon as possible to report the damage and begin the claims process35. For motor claims, it says to report the accident as soon as possible and not to wait until you have your policy number or all the information about the incident24. For agricultural vehicle claims, existing claims are handled through your local agency office, and you will be asked for your policy number, the vehicle registration or serial number, details of any third parties, the date and circumstances of the incident, an indication of the claim value and a contact number36.

For home claims, the process depends on the damage. After a storm, which NFU Mutual defines as damage caused by severe weather such as high winds, heavy rain, hail, fallen trees or flying debris, you can arrange temporary repairs, but photographs, invoices and receipts must be kept as they may be required as part of your claim, and damaged appliances must not be switched on or used until they have been checked by a qualified professional35. For more complex claims or where damage is more significant, a loss adjuster may be appointed to assess the damage, explain the next steps and support you throughout the claim35. Settlement can take the form of a cash settlement, quotations from local contractors, or repairs through an approved contractor network, and repair times vary with the extent of the damage, contractor availability, weather and demand after widespread storms35.

Subsidence claims are the slowest category. NFU Mutual says some claims may be resolved within several months, while more complex cases can take longer37. The most common causes are trees and vegetation and leaking drains, and investigations may include drain testing, trial holes, monitoring movement and measuring cracks37. Where third-party involvement is required, such as cooperation from a neighbouring property owner, local authority or water company, monitoring can last several months37. Repairs can normally begin once the cause of the movement has been addressed and the property is considered stable, and at the end of the claim you receive a Certificate of Structural Adequacy recording the damage, the investigations and the completed works37.

Glass claims have their own route: NFU Mutual's approved suppliers, or the Claim Notification Line on 0808 115 9790, where you can select the option to report a new glass claim23.

Service record and how to complain

NFU Mutual's independent ratings are strong. Which? gives its Bespoke home policies its top rating for both buildings and contents cover, and NFU Mutual scored 86% when Which? asked customers to rate its claims handling20. The brand is a Which? Recommended Provider for Home Insurance, and Which? rates it as a top provider for car insurance as of January 202615. NFU Mutual notes that it is not available on MoneySuperMarket, consistent with its direct-only distribution20.

On complaints, NFU Mutual says it actively encourages members to let it know at the first hint that something is not right, by phone, e-mail or letter38. It also asks customers to tell it about communication preferences, disabilities, health conditions, caring responsibilities or any need for additional support, so support can be built into the claims process24.

If a complaint is not resolved to your satisfaction, it can be taken to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which looks at complaints about financial businesses, including complaints about financial advice. In one published case study, for example, the ombudsman considered a complaint about advice to transfer a pension, examining whether the original policies' guaranteed annuity rates were competitive at the time of the advice39. The ombudsman service is free to use.

How NFU Mutual policyholders are protected

The firm behind the brand is the society incorporated in 1910, authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority since 1 December 2001 with reference number 117664, and on the Prudential Regulation Authority's list of UK insurers authorised to carry out contracts of insurance1. Its current trading names are NFU Mutual and NFU Mutual Direct8. As a mutual, it has no shareholders, which NFU Mutual says means it works in the interests of its customers2.

Not everything sold under the NFU Mutual name is underwritten by NFU Mutual itself. Its life cover and protection products are provided in partnership with Aviva, and home emergency cover is administered by ARAG plc on behalf of NFU Mutual6. Financial advice is provided by NFU Mutual's financial advice arm10. When you take a policy, the schedule documents tell you who the insurer is, and that is the firm your contract is with.

Your policy schedule sets out who insures you, what is covered and the excess that applies: keep it somewhere you can find it.

Within its own motor policies, NFU Mutual adds protections that go beyond the standard: if you are hit by an uninsured driver, your no claims discount is protected and no excess is payable, provided you supply the driver's details, vehicle details and any independent witnesses25. Frequently asked questions

Is NFU Mutual only for farmers?

No. NFU Mutual began serving farmers and remains a leading farm insurer, but its home, car, life and investment products are open to anyone. Its car insurance covers ordinary drivers, its home insurance covers all types of property, and its financial advisers work with customers across the UK. The rural specialism shows in extras such as agricultural vehicle and trailer cover, horse insurance and policies tailored to farming businesses, but none of the main personal products requires a farming connection.

Why can't I find NFU Mutual on price comparison websites?

NFU Mutual chooses not to list its policies on price comparison websites. Quotes come either from its UK-based call centre, Mutual Direct, or from one of its local agency offices, which offer a face-to-face service. Comparison sites also tend to offer fairly generic policies, so for cover tailored to specific circumstances, such as a farm, a high-value home or a classic campervan, a direct conversation may be a closer fit.

Does a glass claim affect my no claims discount with NFU Mutual?

No. NFU Mutual states there is no reduction in your no claims discount after a glass claim, including a windscreen replacement. Repairs carry no excess at all, and a replacement carries only your glass replacement excess. NFU Mutual's approved glass suppliers are Allscreens Nationwide, National Windscreens and Auto Windscreens, and a windscreen replacement can include recalibration of driver assistance systems where needed.

Can I use my own garage for an NFU Mutual car insurance repair?

NFU Mutual's repair process is built around its recommended repairer scheme, which comes with a lifetime guarantee on repairs for as long as you own the vehicle, plus the use of manufacturer repairers where required. Using a garage outside the scheme may mean the guarantee does not apply. NFU Mutual says settlement options can include a cash settlement in accordance with your policy terms, so this can be raised when a claim is made.

What happens to NFU Mutual policies when the policyholder dies?

It depends on the policy. NFU Mutual's life cover is designed to pay out on death: Level Term Assurance pays a fixed amount if the life assured dies during the term, while Whole of Life pays a lump sum whenever death occurs, made up of a guaranteed level of cover plus any bonuses added. For general insurance, the provider says to contact the cover provider about a policy after a death, or to discuss changes to cover after a life event.

Who provides NFU Mutual life cover?

NFU Mutual has teamed up with Aviva to offer its range of life cover and protection products, so the underlying insurer is Aviva. Financial advice on these products is provided by NFU Mutual's financial advice arm. NFU Mutual also offers its own older life assurance policies, such as Special Temporary Assurance, where premiums are eligible for tax relief.

How long does an NFU Mutual subsidence claim take?

NFU Mutual says some subsidence claims may be resolved within several months, while more complex cases can take longer. The process can involve investigations such as drain testing and monitoring movement over time, and where third parties such as neighbouring owners or the local authority are involved, monitoring alone can last several months. Repairs normally begin once the cause is addressed and the property is stable, and the claim ends with a Certificate of Structural Adequacy.
