Salford Credit Union

Salford Credit Union is a not-for-profit co-operative for people who live or work in Salford and parts of North Manchester. It offers a share savings account, Christmas and junior savings, affordable loans including a green home energy loan, and the Engage prepaid card. Here is what each one does, who can join, how to apply and how your money is protected.

Salford Credit Union logo

Salford Credit Union is a not-for-profit co-operative that offers savings and loans to people who live or work in Salford and parts of North Manchester. It is not a bank and it does not sell current accounts in the ordinary sense. It has lent over £20m in the last 10 years, and its members' savings are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £120,0001.

Membership starts with a savings account, called a share account, because each member owns a share of the credit union. You need at least £5 in that account to keep it open, and you can pay in by standing order, payroll, cheque or debit card2.

Alongside the share account it runs a Christmas savings account, junior savings from birth, a family loan, personal loans, a payroll loan for employees of supporting employers, a green loan for home energy improvements, and the Engage prepaid card, which works as a budgeting account2.

What Salford Credit Union offers its members

Credit unions are not-for-profit community lenders, and all of them offer savings and loans12. Salford Credit Union describes itself as a not-for-profit co-operative that shares any profits with members, and it says simply: "We offer savings and loans."7

That is the shape of the whole organisation. There is no current account with an overdraft, no mortgage and no credit card. What there is instead is a savings account that every member holds, a set of loan products built around different circumstances, and a prepaid card for day-to-day budgeting. Larger credit unions elsewhere add extra services such as cash Child Trust Funds, ISAs, budgeting accounts, current accounts and debt management, but those are not part of what Salford Credit Union lists13.

The practical consequence for a reader is that Salford Credit Union is a place to save regularly and to borrow affordably, not a replacement for a high street bank account. Most people who join keep their bank account for bills and wages and use the credit union alongside it. If you are looking for a full current account, the current accounts guide sets out what banks and building societies offer, and MoneyHelper notes that credit union current accounts exist but may carry a monthly fee15.

Savings: the share account and Christmas savings

When you join Salford Credit Union, a savings account is opened for you automatically3. This is the share account, and it is the foundation of membership: you must have at least £5 in it to keep the account open2. You can pay in by standing order, from your benefits or wages, by cheque, or by debit card over the phone or at the Brotherton House office3.

The credit union also runs a Christmas savings account, and its own guidance is that the earlier in the year you start saving, the better10. Once you are a member you can apply to join the Christmas Club7. This is a common pattern across the movement: Christmas savings accounts are additional accounts that help members budget through the year, and they are usually open only to existing members13.

If you are weighing up where to keep savings more generally, the savings guide covers interest rates, access and protection across account types, and the ISAs guide explains tax-free savings. Salford Credit Union does not publish rates on this page, and its own site is the place to check today's figures.

Loans, including the Home Energy Loan Plan

Salford Credit Union's lending is the largest part of what it does. It has lent over £20m in the last 10 years, and it says applications are assessed on an individual basis rather than by an automated score alone1.

The main products are:

  • Personal loans, which run for up to 5 years, with no early repayment charges and no admin, set-up or early repayment fees. Once approved, the money is in your account the same day, subject to daily cut-off times4.
  • The Salford Family Loan, which involves no credit check, though paying it back may boost your credit rating9.
  • The payroll loan, for employees of supporting employers, with payments for loans and savings taken automatically from wages on payday6.
  • The green loan, branded the Home Energy Loan Plan or HELP scheme, for home improvements that reduce your environmental impact and your energy bills5.

The green loan is the one with the most conditions attached. It can be used for solar panels, heat pumps, double glazing, insulation and other energy efficient home improvements, and a copy of a retrofit contract must be provided. The credit union can arrange to pay the retrofitter directly5.

That sits alongside wider government support for home energy work. The Warm Homes Plan, announced in January 2026, is intended to let all households apply for low or zero-interest loans, with low-income homes able to apply for full financial support for energy upgrades16. Separately, grants or loans for insulation, draught proofing and central heating may be available under the Affordable Warmth Obligation, and it is worth checking with your energy supplier17. Age UK's guide covers making your home more energy efficient, getting the best energy deal, what to do if you cannot pay your energy bill, and the help available with bills18.

For borrowing more generally, the loans guide explains how interest, terms and early repayment work across lenders. If you are already struggling with debt, StepChange notes that credit unions are one of the alternatives to high-cost credit, and its guidance on payday loans sets out why those products are usually a worse option19. Free help is available from MoneyHelper and from debt advice charities.

The Engage prepaid card as a budgeting account

Salford Credit Union offers the Engage account and Visa debit card. It works like an account from a high street bank, but it is only available from an Engage accredited credit union10. You can use the card to shop, pay bills and save money with a cashback rewards programme10.

The credit union describes its product set as a savings account, lower interest affordable loans, and the Engage prepaid debit card usable as a budgeting account10. That framing matters: a prepaid card is a way to ring-fence spending money rather than a full bank account.

MoneyHelper draws the same distinction when it lists alternatives to a basic bank account. A credit union current account may carry a monthly fee, while a prepaid card account usually does not require ID but generally cannot be used to set up payments such as direct debits15. If you need standing orders and direct debits, a prepaid card will not do that job.

Prepaid cards carry charges, and how they work varies by provider and by card type. Darlington Credit Union's published terms, for example, show a card replacement fee on its premium card and a charge for certain card payments on its pay-as-you-go card, with ATM and balance enquiry charges also applying21. Salford Credit Union does not publish its Engage fees on this page, so its own site is the place to check the current figures before you rely on the card.

Who can join: living or working in Salford and parts of North Manchester

You can join Salford Credit Union if you live or work in Salford or parts of North Manchester, specifically parts of the M25, M8, M9 and M40 postcode areas2. The credit union publishes a map showing the exact boundary, and it is worth checking it before you apply, because a postcode that looks close to the area may fall outside it.

There is a second route in through employment. Employees of the organisations signed up to the payroll scheme, who live or work in Salford, North Manchester and Prestwich, may pay in by payroll deduction6. If your employer is on that list, you can save and repay a loan straight from your wages.

This kind of geographic boundary is called a common bond, and it is how credit unions are structured. Other credit unions define theirs differently: East Kilbride Credit Union, for instance, covers people who live or work in South Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire or East Renfrewshire22. Recent changes are also widening eligibility across the movement to include students, local workers and relatives of existing members, reflecting the way people actually live and work23.

If you are outside Salford's area, the credit unions guide explains how to find one that covers you, and the Association of British Credit Unions runs a finder at www.findyourcreditunion.co.uk13.

Junior savers: membership from birth

Members can join Salford Credit Union from birth, and they become full members eligible to apply for loans after their 18th birthday2. At 18, the junior member becomes solely responsible for their membership and can start voting8.

The junior savings account is designed to be opened by an adult for a child. Other credit unions in the movement show how the pattern usually works: Capital Credit Union lets children under 16 join as junior members and open a junior saver account, and one credit union allows members to apply for a junior saver account for each child who lives with them, with the child becoming a full member on their 16th birthday24. Just Credit Union's young saver accounts run from birth up to the age of 1626.

Some credit unions also run a Christmas club specifically for young savers, which lets a child build up a pot through the year22. Salford Credit Union's own junior savings page is the place to check what it currently offers for children, including whether a passbook or online access is provided.

Saving through your employer's payroll

If you work for one of Salford Credit Union's supporting employers, you are eligible for deductions from your payroll. The credit union describes this as a safe and convenient way of saving regularly, with access to very competitive loans2.

The payroll loan works the same way in reverse: payments for both loans and savings are taken automatically from your wages on payday, and the credit union aims to give you a decision within two days of receiving the information it requests6. The stated benefit is that you build up savings as you pay off your loan6.

This is a well-established model. Leeds Credit Union lets employees of companies signed up to its payroll scheme join and save through their pay, and existing savers can change the amount deducted by emailing the credit union with their membership number27. SCVO Credit Union describes payroll deduction as saving automatically from your payday salary, and lets members join through their employer, who deducts savings or borrowings from payroll28. Capital Credit Union offers the same for members of select partner employers24.

The practical advantage is that the money never reaches your current account, so it is harder to spend by accident. The practical limitation is that if you change jobs, the deduction stops and you need to switch to a standing order or another method.

How to join online and what documents you need

Joining online needs an email address, your National Insurance number and bank details, plus proof of identity and address2.

To join online you need an email address, your National Insurance number and your bank account details2. Your National Insurance number can be found on a payslip, P60, Benefits Letter or NI card2.

You will also need proof of identity and address. These documents must be originals and not more than three months old, with the exception of your Council Tax bill, Benefits Letter or HM Revenue letter, which must be for the current year2.

If you do not have photographic ID, there is a route for you. Salford Credit Union asks for three items, which should include any two of the bills or statements it lists plus one other document, either a Benefits Letter or a letter from HM Customs & Excise showing your tax code2. Other credit unions take a similar approach: Bedfordshire Credit Union accepts photo ID and proof of address, or two to three other forms of ID including proof of current address30. East Kilbride Credit Union asks for one form of photographic ID and one form of proof of address dated within the last three months when joining at the office22.

Once your application is in, Salford Credit Union usually contacts you within two working days to confirm membership and arrange payment for the membership fee and first savings deposit2. If the membership fee and initial savings have not been received within two months of the account being opened, the credit union may need to close it to avoid the costs of maintaining inactive accounts2.

How loan applications and decisions work

Salford Credit Union assesses loan applications on an individual basis1. It may make searches about you at credit reference agencies, which supply credit information and information from the Electoral Register, and those searches are recorded whether or not the application proceeds14.

The credit union may also use credit scoring methods to assist the application and verify your identity1. Other credit unions go further: Bradford District Credit Union uses credit reference agencies and open banking to decide the loan amount and the rate charged to members31.

To get a credit union loan you must be a member, and membership will start if you receive a loan1. You will have your own savings account and will be asked to start saving regularly with the credit union1. All approved loans are subject to terms and conditions14.

On timing, Salford Credit Union aims to give a decision within 3 to 5 working days of receiving all the information it needs, and it says this is usually quicker after your first loan1. For the payroll loan the target is two days from receipt of the information requested6. Some decisions are made the same day10. Once a personal loan is approved, the money is in your account the same day, subject to daily cut-off times4.

If you are comparing borrowing options, the credit scores guide explains what lenders see, and the loans guide covers how rates and terms are set. Buy now, pay later is regulated differently from a credit union loan, and the FCA sets out how those agreements work33.

How your savings are protected

Salford Credit Union Ltd is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority14. Its firm reference number is 213304, and it has been authorised since 2 July 200211. It also appears on the Bank of England's list of UK-incorporated credit unions regulated by the PRA34.

Your deposits are protected up to £120,0002. The credit union states that eligible deposits with Salford Credit Union Ltd are protected up to a total of £120,000 by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme8.

The FSCS limit applies across your accounts with the firm, not per account. Credit unions generally are covered by the FSCS in the same way as banks and building societies, and the scheme protects up to £120,000 of the money you have saved across your bank, building society and credit union accounts13. Some credit unions add free savings protection cover on top of the FSCS limit on certain accounts, with terms and conditions applying21.

If something goes wrong with a loan or a savings account and the credit union does not resolve it, you can take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. StepChange explains how the ombudsman works and what it can award36. Salford Credit Union's own complaints process commits to acknowledging your complaint within 3 working days and aiming to resolve it within eight weeks, with a copy of the resolution in writing14.
