North Coatbridge Credit Union is a member-owned credit union serving people who live or work in Coatbridge or Airdrie. It takes savings, lends to members, and runs both from a head office on Sunnyside Road. Its savings are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme1.
The credit union's model is the one credit unions generally use: you save first, and your record of saving shapes what you can borrow. A first loan is capped at double the amount you have saved, and you must have paid into your shares for 3 months consecutively and at the same amount before you can apply2. Once you are an established member, unsecured borrowing runs to up to 4 times your share value, repayable over a maximum of 3 years2.
Membership is restricted to the Coatbridge and Airdrie area, proven with two documents dated within the last three months showing your name and address1. The credit union sets a joining fee and a minimum opening amount for its savings account, and its own savings page carries the current figures3.
What North Coatbridge Credit Union offers
The credit union sells two things: savings accounts and loans. Its savings side is an instant access account, and its lending side runs from a first loan through to secured and top-up borrowing. That is a narrower range than some credit unions, which also offer junior savings accounts, Christmas savings accounts, prepaid debit cards, insurance products, cash ISAs and in some cases mortgages4.
If you want a current account with a card and an overdraft, a credit union may not be the right shape of provider: credit unions generally offer savings and loans rather than the full banking service a bank current account gives you, and you usually will not have to pass a credit check to open a credit union account, even if you apply for an overdraft5. For the wider picture of what a credit union can and cannot do, see credit unions: a complete guide.
The savings account is the entry point. You can access it online, on the phone or in one of the branches, and you can pay in with cash or debit card at a branch, or by standing order direct from your bank account1. The credit union's own savings page sets out the current terms, and the savings accounts guide explains how instant access accounts compare with notice accounts and fixed terms elsewhere.
Who can join: living or working in Coatbridge or Airdrie
Membership is defined by a common bond, the area or workplace group a credit union is allowed to serve. North Coatbridge Credit Union's common bond is people who live or work in Coatbridge or Airdrie, and you prove it with two documents dated within the last three months showing your name and address1.
Common bonds vary widely between credit unions, which is why the one you can join depends on where you are. The table below shows how four credit unions define theirs.
| Credit union | Who it serves |
|---|---|
| North Coatbridge Credit Union | People who live or work in Coatbridge or Airdrie1 |
| Pennyburn Credit Union | The BT47 and BT48 postcode areas6 |
| Moray Firth Credit Union | People who live, work or study in Moray or Nairn7 |
| East Kilbride Credit Union | South Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire8 |
| Capital Credit Union | An occupational common bond: eligible UK occupations, people retired from one and receiving a private pension, people living in the same household as an existing member, or members of a listed partner organisation9 |
Some credit unions extend membership to family. Where one member of a family meets the common bond and has joined, other family members living at the same address can usually join too10. North Tyneside Employees Credit Union states the same rule for its own members11. If you are outside the Coatbridge and Airdrie area, the trade body's finder tool lists credit unions by location4.
Joining and saving with North Coatbridge Credit Union
Joining is done in person. You bring your documents to the head office on Sunnyside Road and fill out a membership application, and staff are available to help1. That is the pattern across the movement: Banbridge Credit Union asks members to call into its office so a member of staff can help complete the application form1, and the general advice is to visit or call your chosen credit union to confirm what information you need4.
Expect to be asked for photo identification and proof of address. Pennyburn Credit Union asks for a valid photo ID and proof of address dated within the last three months12, and East Kilbride Credit Union asks for one form of photographic ID and one form of proof of address dated within the last three months when you join at the office8. North Tyneside Employees Credit Union asks for proof of ID such as a driving licence or passport and proof of address such as a recent utility bill11.
Once you are a member, saving is flexible. The credit union charges a joining fee and sets a minimum amount to open the account, and its savings page gives the current figures3. You can save in cash or by debit card at a branch, or by standing order from your bank account1.
Your first loan: save first, then borrow
The first loan is where the saving habit pays off. North Coatbridge Credit Union requires you to pay into your shares for 3 months consecutively and at the same amount before you can apply, and the loan is then capped at double the amount you have saved2. You must provide adequate proof of income, and the loan decision takes place over the course of 7 days2. The loan must be repaid over between 6 and 12 months2.
That save-first structure is common but not universal. Credit unions usually, but not always, lend if you have saved a certain amount with them first, and some will ask you to build savings before borrowing13. Others lend as soon as you become a member, and check affordability against the money you have left after paying your bills10. The general pattern is that a credit union will let you borrow two or three times as much as you have saved, at a low interest rate15.
The trade-off is speed. North Coatbridge Credit Union's 7 days for a first loan decision is slower than several other credit unions, as the table shows.
| Credit union | Stated decision time |
|---|---|
| North Coatbridge Credit Union | 7 days for a first loan2 |
| Pennyburn Credit Union | Typically 1 to 2 working days6 |
| Partners Credit Union | Most decisions within 24 to 48 hours once all information is received16 |
| Salford Credit Union | Within 3 to 5 working days of receiving all the information it needs17 |
| South Herts Credit Union | Usually within 3 to 7 working days18 |
| South Coatbridge Credit Union | Aims to respond to all enquiries by the next working day19 |
Unsecured loans are based on your savings
An unsecured loan is not linked to your home20. Most overdrafts, credit cards, catalogues, store cards and personal loans are unsecured, and they are usually treated as non-priority debts if you fall behind21. That matters if you are comparing a credit union loan with other borrowing: the credit union's unsecured lending sits in the same legal category as a card or an overdraft, not in the same category as a mortgage or a logbook loan.
North Coatbridge Credit Union's unsecured loans run to up to 4 times your share value, repayable over a maximum of 3 years2. They are only granted with proof of ability to repay, and they are subjected to possible credit reference checks2. The credit union's own loans page carries the current terms, and the loans guide sets out how unsecured lending works across the market.
Other credit unions assess unsecured lending in similar ways. Drumchapel Credit Union says loans are based on the ability to repay and on how your account operates23. Capital Credit Union asks for one month's proof of income and a recent bank statement for applications between £1,000 and £2,500, and two months of proof of income and two months of recent bank statements for loans above £2,50024. Drumchapel Credit Union may ask for proof of income and proof of address in the form of a bank statement showing income and outgoings23.
One feature worth knowing about is insurance on the loan. BAG Credit Union says its credit union loans are insured, subject to terms and conditions, at no direct cost to you, and notes that other lenders charge for that cover25. North Coatbridge Credit Union says all loans are covered by life insurance at no extra cost to the member26.
Secured loans against your shares
A secured loan at North Coatbridge Credit Union is a loan up to the value of your shares, where your loan balance would not be above your share balance2. It is available to all members at any time, and the credit union says these loans are granted immediately upon application2. You do not need to provide proof of income for this type of loan, only identification2.
The security is your own savings, not your home. Willowfield Credit Union describes the same product: these loans are secured against the amount you have in your shares, and are available immediately over the counter or by applying online27. Drumchapel Credit Union says that where loans are totally secured, shares up to the value of the loan will be attached, and it does not require proof of income or outgoings23.
The practical consequence is that a secured loan is quick and lightly assessed, because the credit union already holds the money that stands behind it. The trade-off is that the savings you pledged are tied up while the loan runs. Willowfield Credit Union goes further and states that all of its loans are secured by the amount you have in shares27, which is not the case at North Coatbridge Credit Union, where the secured product is a distinct option.
Top-up loans: borrowing again before you finish repaying
A top-up loan lets you borrow more before your existing loan is finished. At North Coatbridge Credit Union you can apply if it is not your first loan and you have paid off 20% of your last loan balance2. The maximum is worked out by multiplying your share balance by 4 and subtracting your present loan balance, to bring it back up to the maximum2. You must provide adequate proof of income each time you apply2.
The way a top-up is structured matters. Capital Credit Union explains that a top-up sets up a new loan for the remaining balance plus the extra amount, paying off the old loan, and that the new loan may have a different interest rate from your initial loan and the term might be different too24. Pennyburn Credit Union describes the member's side of it: you can apply for a loan on top of your existing loan balance, which means you pay back one loan repayment instead of two6.
Not every credit union works this way. South Coatbridge Credit Union requires that before receiving any further loans you must have paid back your first loan19, and Newmains Credit Union applies the same rule to a second loan28. So the ability to top up mid-loan is a feature of how North Coatbridge Credit Union runs its lending, not a universal credit union rule.
Withdrawing savings affects what you can borrow
Because your share balance sets your borrowing limit, taking money out of your savings has a knock-on effect. North Coatbridge Credit Union states plainly that if you withdraw any of your savings this will affect your future loan applications2.
You can still get at your money. Credit unions generally allow you to withdraw your savings on request29, and South Coatbridge Credit Union says you can have the money in your account the same day once a loan agreement is signed19. But some credit unions restrict withdrawals while you are repaying a loan: South Herts Credit Union says you may be able to withdraw from your share account as long as your share balance does not as a consequence fall below one-third of your current loan balance, and only while you are repaying and not in arrears18.
The rule of thumb is that savings you may need at short notice and savings that are backing a loan are not the same pot. If you are building a cushion for emergencies, the emergency funding guidance covers where to hold it and what it is for.
How your savings are protected
Credit union savings are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme10. North Coatbridge Credit Union signals this on its savings page with the FSCS logo linking to the scheme's own site1. Credit unions in Northern Ireland are covered by the same scheme29, and individual credit unions confirm their own cover: Moray Firth Credit Union states it is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme7, and Oldham Credit Union states its savings are fully protected by the scheme up to £85,00030.
The scheme covers eligible deposits up to its limit per person, per firm. Carlisle and District Credit Union describes member savings up to £120,000 as 100% protected, the same as any other bank, building society or approved financial institution18. The limit is a single figure that applies across the institutions you hold money with, so if you have savings with a bank and with a credit union, both count towards the same ceiling. The consumer protection guide explains how the scheme works and where it stops.
Two further protections sit alongside the scheme. All shares, meaning savings, in an affiliated credit union are eligible for protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme31. And the credit union says every person who handles credit union money is bonded and all cash is banked26. All loans are covered by life insurance at no extra cost to the member, and the savings or shares of members earn life insurance without extra cost, with a few exceptions26.
Contacting North Coatbridge Credit Union and complaining
The credit union's website is www.northcoatbridgecu.co.uk33. The site carries the savings, loans and membership pages, and the credit union's contact details. Its head office is on Sunnyside Road, and that is where membership applications are completed1.
If something goes wrong, the first step is the credit union's own complaints process. If you are not satisfied with its final response, you can take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free to consumers34. The ombudsman looks at complaints about financial firms and can order a firm to put things right. The consumer protection guide sets out how the ombudsman works and what it can and cannot do.
