Most investment platform withdrawals land in your bank account within one to twelve working days. The exact time depends on whether you are withdrawing cash you already hold or selling investments first, and on how long the underlying funds take to settle.
If you are withdrawing cash, some platforms pay it out in one to three business days, and a few use Faster Payment so it can arrive within hours. If your money is invested, the platform has to sell the holdings first. That sale has to settle before the cash can be sent, which typically adds two to five working days, and some funds take longer.
The rules give a backstop. For ISAs, the business period for implementing a transfer or withdrawal instruction must not exceed 30 days, with exceptions for certain innovative finance and stocks and shares investments1. Lifetime ISA guidance says an account holder should usually be able to withdraw their savings and investments within 30 days of requesting them2.
Typical withdrawal times: from 1 to 12 working days
The range across UK platforms is wide, and the differences come down to what you are withdrawing and how the platform is set up.
At the fast end, cash withdrawals from Vanguard Investor can take one to three business days5. Bestinvest says online withdrawals to your bank account are usually processed as Faster Payment, so should reach your account within one to two working days8. At the slower end, Vanguard Investor's managed withdrawal, where it sells funds for you, usually takes seven to twelve working days depending on the fund's settlement period5. Moneyfarm processes disinvestment and withdrawal requests within one business day of receipt, but the funds then take seven to ten working days to reach your bank account6.
Pension withdrawals tend to sit at the slower end. PensionBee says it usually takes around 10 working days for you to receive your money once bank details and identity are verified7. Fidelity Pensions says it can take up to 15 working days to reach your bank account9. Vanguard Personal Pension says the withdrawal process usually takes around three weeks10.
Some providers are much quicker. NS&I says withdrawals from Income Bonds, Direct ISA, Premium Bonds and Direct Saver can take three to five days to reach your bank account11. For NS&I accounts, when it gets your instruction on a banking day before 20:00, it processes it that day, and the payment normally reaches your account by the end of the first banking day after that for withdrawals up to £50,00015.

| Quilter | Investment or pension | Up to 10 working days18 |
| PensionBee | Pension | Around 10 working days7 |
| Vanguard Investor | Managed (funds sold) | 7 to 12 working days5 |
| Fidelity Pensions | Pension | Up to 15 working days9 |

Cash or investments: selling first adds days
The single biggest factor in how long a withdrawal takes is whether your money is already sitting as cash or still invested.
If you hold cash on the platform, there is nothing to sell. The platform can send the money straight away, subject to its own payment runs. Vanguard Investor says when you withdraw cash, it can take one to three business days for it to be paid into your bank account5. No.1 Copperpot says withdrawals are sent via Faster Payment, which means the funds will be in your bank account instantly, though it could take up to two hours19.
If your money is invested, the platform has to sell the holdings first. Hargreaves Lansdown puts it plainly: "Your investments will need to be sold first though, so your money might not be available for a few days"20. Santander says many types of investments can be sold quickly with very little effort on your part and you will usually get the proceeds within five days21. Aviva says to wait for the sale to settle, usually two to five working days, before withdrawing4.
That settlement period is not the platform being slow. When a fund is sold, the deal is struck at a valuation point, but the cash does not move between the fund manager and the platform until the settlement date. Only then can the platform pass the money to you. Freetrade notes that this may not happen immediately after the cut-off time, and in some cases may take several days for the fund manager to confirm your transaction22.
Settlement periods and why some funds take longer
Different investments settle at different speeds, and that is the main reason two people withdrawing from the same platform on the same day can wait different lengths of time.
Shares and exchange-traded funds usually settle faster than unit trusts and OEICs, because they trade on an exchange with a standard settlement cycle. Funds are priced once or twice a day, and the manager needs time to process the deal. Freetrade says transfers of mutual funds can take up to eight weeks to complete, depending on the other provider, type of account, and the funds involved22. That is at the extreme end, but it shows how far the range stretches.
Platforms quote their own settlement windows. Aviva says the sale usually settles in two to five working days before you can withdraw4. Hargreaves Lansdown says in most cases transfers take two to six weeks, though some can take longer23. ii says transfers typically take up to four weeks for cash transfers and six weeks when transferring investments24. Santander says it can take up to 30 days to receive your monies from when it receives your request to transfer funds25.
Some accounts impose a notice period on top. A 180 Days Notice Cash ISA requires investments to be transferred or paid to the investor within a reasonable business period not exceeding 30 days on the investor's instructions26. A 40 Day Notice Cash ISA requires 40 days' notice, and without notice there is 40 days' loss of interest on the amount withdrawn, taken from capital if interest is insufficient27. A 90 Day Notice Account requires 90 days' notice per withdrawal, and you cannot withdraw your funds earlier than this28. A Notice 60 account is subject to 60 days' notice, with a maximum of five working days to make the withdrawal once notice is served29.
These notice accounts are savings products rather than investment platforms, but they matter if you hold cash inside a stocks and shares ISA wrapper or a platform's cash facility. The Canada Life guide notes that for a cash reserve facility, most payments are released within 10 working days, though it may take up to 30 days30.
How to make a withdrawal and avoid delays
The mechanics differ by platform, but the steps are broadly the same, and most delays come from things that can be sorted before you request the money.
- Check your bank details are verified. Vanguard Investor says it can take up to three days for your bank account to be verified, after which you can withdraw cash31. PensionBee says its around 10 working days timescale applies as long as there are no issues verifying your bank details7.
- Decide whether to withdraw cash or sell investments. If you already hold cash, withdrawing it avoids the settlement wait entirely5.
- Submit the request early in the working day. NS&I processes instructions received on a banking day before 20:00 that day, and the payment normally reaches your account by the end of the first banking day after that for withdrawals up to £50,00015.
- Check whether your platform offers an urgent withdrawal. Some platforms distinguish between a standard and an urgent withdrawal, which may carry a different timescale or fee.
- Keep the payment reference. If the money does not arrive within the platform's stated timescale, you will need it when you contact them.
Some withdrawals are much slower by design. Peer-to-peer platforms are the clearest example: Which? warns that you could face waits of several months to withdraw your money32. Kuflink says withdrawals can take up to five working days to be processed33. If you hold innovative finance ISA investments, the 30-day ISA rule does not apply in the same way, because the legislation carves out exceptions for certain innovative finance and stocks and shares investments1.
At the other end, some cash accounts pay almost instantly. Chip says withdrawals from its Instant Access Account are typically within seconds, though on occasion this may take up to two hours34. ESBS says to allow three working days for funds to reach your nominated bank account from its Triple Access Cash ISA Online35. Chip's investing promotion says it can take up to five working days to reach your linked bank account if you withdraw it, and it will only be withdrawn after you withdraw your entire balance36.
Why has my investment withdrawal not arrived yet?
If the money has not arrived and the platform's stated timescale has passed, there are a few common explanations.
The most frequent is that the sale has not settled yet. Even if the platform shows the sale as complete, the cash may still be moving between the fund manager and the platform. Aviva's two to five working day settlement window is typical4. Another common cause is a verification hold. If your bank details or identity have not been confirmed, the platform may not be able to release the money at all31.
A third possibility is that the withdrawal has triggered a charge or a notice period you were not expecting. A 40 Day Notice Cash ISA, for example, applies 40 days' loss of interest on the amount withdrawn if the required notice is not given, taken from capital if interest is insufficient27. A 90 Day Notice Account simply cannot be withdrawn from earlier than 90 days28.
If none of these apply, contact the platform directly and ask for the payment reference and the date the payment was sent. If you are not satisfied with the response, you can complain to the platform formally. If the complaint is not resolved to your satisfaction, you can take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free and independent.
How long does a Vanguard Investor withdrawal take?
Vanguard Investor quotes different timescales depending on what you are withdrawing and how.
For a managed withdrawal, where Vanguard chooses and manages your investments, the whole process of selling the funds and the proceeds clearing in your bank account usually takes seven to twelve working days depending on the fund's settlement period5. If you withdraw cash you already hold, it can take one to three business days for it to be paid into your bank account5. If funds must be sold first, it can take five days or more5.
For a Vanguard Personal Pension, the withdrawal process usually takes around three weeks10. Vanguard also notes that it can take up to three days for your bank account to be verified, after which you can withdraw cash31.
How long does Moneyfarm take to pay out a withdrawal?
Moneyfarm says it processes disinvestment and withdrawal requests within one business day of receipt, but the funds then take seven to ten working days to reach your bank account6. Its Cash ISA key document says withdrawals may take up to three working days to process17.
The gap between processing and payment reflects the time needed to sell the underlying investments and for those sales to settle. Moneyfarm's terms are consistent across its documents: one business day to process, then seven to ten working days for the money to arrive6.
What protects you if a withdrawal is late
The main protection is the ISA rule that the business period for implementing a transfer or withdrawal instruction must not exceed 30 days, subject to exceptions for certain innovative finance and stocks and shares investments1. Lifetime ISA guidance says an account holder should usually be able to withdraw their savings and investments within 30 days of requesting them2.
If a platform misses its own stated timescale, you can complain. If the complaint is not resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service can look at it. The service is free to consumers.
For pension withdrawals, there is an additional protection: your provider may offer a cooling-off period, often 30 days, allowing you to reverse the withdrawal, though eligibility depends on when and how you accessed your tax-free cash39.
Where the rules differ between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the ISA rules apply across the UK. Pension and tax rules are largely consistent, though some benefits and advice services differ by nation.
