Coalisland Credit Union

Coalisland Credit Union is a Northern Ireland credit union open to members who live or work in its common bond. It lends from £100 up to £75,000, or £100,000 for joint borrowing, and asks borrowers to hold 10% of the loan in savings. Here is what it offers, what it checks, what it costs and how your money is protected.

Coalisland Credit Union logo

Coalisland Credit Union is a Northern Ireland credit union that lends to its members and holds their savings. It offers loans from as little as £100 up to £75,000, with joint borrowing up to £100,000, and it asks borrowers to hold 10% of the amount they want to borrow in savings1. There are no application fees and no early repayment or lump sum charges1.

It is a member-owned organisation rather than a bank, so joining comes first and borrowing follows. The credit union describes its loan process as fully remote: you apply online and sign your documents online before funds reach you digitally, without visiting an office1. It also runs a savings-secured loan and a motor loan, and offers death benefit insurance to members3.

This page covers what each product is, how the savings pledge works, what the credit union checks before it lends, how to apply, how to complain, and how money held with it is protected.

What Coalisland Credit Union offers

The credit union's core business is savings and loans, which is what all credit unions offer8. Alongside its standard lending it runs a small number of named loan products and one insurance benefit for members.

Its loan range starts at £100 and runs to £75,000, with joint loans up to £100,0001. The £20,000 to £75,000 loan is the large-sum product, with joint borrowing available up to £100,000 and a maximum term of 120 months, or 10 years2. The savings-secured loan is built around money the member already holds with the credit union3. The motor loan is aimed at vehicle purchase4. Death benefit insurance is a member benefit rather than a loan5.

Credit unions generally sit alongside banks rather than replacing them. All credit unions offer savings and loans, and the larger ones add services such as Christmas savings accounts, budgeting accounts, current accounts, cash ISAs and, in some cases, mortgages8. Coalisland Credit Union's own published product list is narrower than that, centred on the loans above and member insurance.

If you are weighing up a credit union against a bank or building society, the credit unions guide sets out how the model works, and the loans guide covers borrowing more broadly. For the savings side, see savings accounts.

Coalisland Credit Union loans: from small sums to large and joint borrowing

The credit union's lending splits into a general loan, a large-sum loan with a joint option, a savings-secured loan and a motor loan.

The £20,000 to £75,000 loan is the product for larger sums, and it is the one that carries the joint borrowing option: the credit union lists it as "£20,000 - £75,000 (£100,000 joint loans)"2. Its maximum term is 120 months, or 10 years2.

The savings-secured loan works differently from the others, because the security is the member's own savings rather than their income alone3. The motor loan is a purpose loan for buying a vehicle4.

For context on how credit union lending compares, most credit unions lend small amounts of around £50 to £3,000, and some lend larger amounts over longer periods, for example to buy a car or carry out home improvements8. Individual credit unions set their own ceilings: Leeds Credit Union lends from £250 up to £25,000, for example11. Coalisland Credit Union's £75,000 ceiling, and £100,000 for joint borrowing, sits at the larger end of that range1.

A joint loan means two people borrow together and are both liable for the debt. The credit union's own figures put the joint ceiling at £100,0002.

Saving to borrow: how the savings pledge works

Coalisland Credit Union asks borrowers to hold savings equal to 10% of the amount they want to borrow. Its own example is that a £5,000 loan requires £500 in savings1. In some cases more than 10% is required2.

Those savings are not simply set aside; they are pledged. The credit union states that the shares attached to a loan "are provided as collateral for the loan, the withdrawal of which require the approval of the Credit Committee while you still have a loan balance"1. In practice that means the money stays in your account but you cannot take it out freely while the loan is running. Once your outstanding loan is less than the amount in the account, the restriction falls away12.

The credit union is explicit that savings and repayment history do the work that a guarantor or a large deposit might do elsewhere. Its loan policy says: "Your character - your savings and loan history - is your primary collateral. By saving regularly and repaying each loan as agreed, you increase the likelihood of future loans"2.

Other credit unions describe the same mechanism. SAG Credit Union asks members to pledge shares equal to or less than the new loan balance, while treating character as the primary collateral13. Celtic Credit Union sets up a savings pledge alongside loan repayments14. The wider credit union aim is to encourage all members to save regularly9.

A savings pledge holds part of your own money against the loan until the balance falls below it.

Costs and charges on a Coalisland Credit Union loan

Coalisland Credit Union charges no application fees and no early repayment or lump sum charges1. Interest is charged on the reducing balance, so each repayment clears a little of the capital and the interest is worked out on what is left, which means paying the loan off sooner costs less overall15.

The credit union does not publish a single rate that applies to everyone. What you pay depends on the amount, the term and the assessment of your application, and the credit union's own site carries the current figures. Its loan calculator is described as being "for illustrative purposes only, to give you, the borrower, an overview of the potential cost of borrowing"4.

The pattern of no arrangement fees and no early repayment penalties is common across credit unions. Just Credit Union advertises "No hidden charges, arrangement fees or early repayment penalties"16. Ulster Federal Credit Union states there are "no hidden fees or transaction charges"15. Salford Credit Union says it makes "No admin fees or charges for paying off your loan early"17. Willowfield Credit Union allows early repayment "with no penalty"18, and Capital Credit Union allows repayment in full at any time "with no early repayment penalty"19.

One cost that does exist at some credit unions is a joining fee. Coalisland Credit Union's published loan pages do not list an application fee1.

Loan protection and death benefit insurance

Coalisland Credit Union insures members' loans at no direct cost to the borrower. Its loan page states: "Your loan will also be insured at no direct cost to you"1. The credit union also offers Death Benefit Insurance as a member benefit, alongside Loan Protection and Life Savings Insurance5.

Death Benefit Insurance is paid only on receipt of two documents: the member's death certificate and the original funeral invoice5. That is a condition of payment rather than an optional extra, and it is worth knowing in advance because it falls to whoever is handling the member's affairs.

The same idea appears at other credit unions. Just Credit Union provides free loan protection insurance that "will pay off the loan in the event of your death"16. The cover is arranged by the credit union rather than underwritten by it, so the terms come from the insurer behind the scheme rather than from the credit union itself.

Loan protection insurance of this kind is not the same as payment protection insurance sold alongside a loan, and it is not a substitute for life cover or income protection if you have dependants or a mortgage. The protection insurance guide explains how life, income and illness cover work and where each one fits.

Who can borrow and what the credit union checks

You must be a member of a credit union to borrow from it, and some credit unions ask you to build up savings first10. Coalisland Credit Union's savings pledge means the second point applies in practice: 10% of the amount you want to borrow has to be in savings before or alongside the loan1.

The minimum age to apply for a loan is 181. Beyond that, the credit union sets out four things it weighs. Affordability comes first: "You must be able to afford the loan. We are a responsible lender. We do not lend to members who will become over-indebted. Proof of income and affordability will be required"2. It then looks at loan history or character, and at pledged shares. Its summary is that a successful application depends on "the affordability, loan history (if applicable) / character and pledged shares"2.

Credit unions generally consider applications from people with poor credit ratings, which is one of the differences between them and mainstream lenders21. That does not mean approval is automatic. Each application is assessed on its own merits, taking a range of factors into account12.

Some credit unions interview every new applicant. SAG Credit Union conducts a short loan interview with each new loan application to check affordability13, and Kildress Credit Union requires a first time applicant to meet a member of the credit committee before any loan is issued22. Coalisland Credit Union's approach is narrower: it may hold an interview for higher loan values rather than for everyone1.

A loan must be for a provident purpose

Coalisland Credit Union will only lend for what it calls a productive, provident purpose. Its loan policy states: "Your loan must be for a productive, provident purpose. That means it must enhance the quality of your life"2.

That is a broad test rather than a narrow list. Other credit unions spell out the kinds of things it covers: Newtownards Credit Union says members can borrow "for any productive purpose, whether that's to pay for a holiday, carry out home improvements, help out with Christmas or purchase a car"23. Willowfield Credit Union considers applications "for productive and / or provident purposes", each on its own merit18, and Kildress Credit Union uses the same wording22. SAG Credit Union calls it "a fancy way of saying that the loan must enhance the quality of your life"13.

What the rule rules out is borrowing that leaves you worse off. Consolidating existing debts is a common reason people borrow, and it can be a provident purpose if it reduces what you pay overall, but it carries a risk: turning unsecured debts into a loan secured against savings or a home can mean losing the asset if repayments stop. The debt guide sets out the options and the risks, and Northern Ireland's own guidance on consolidating debts covers the same ground24.

Applying for a loan online, from application to funds

Coalisland Credit Union describes a fully remote process: "so we now offer a fully remote loan process. You can do it all without having to visit the office. Apply online and then sign online before receiving your funds digitally"1.

The steps are broadly the ones other credit unions follow. Lisburn Credit Union lets members "apply for your Loan online and sign your documents, without leaving your home"25. Celtic Credit Union's process is to register for online access, complete an online loan application, connect with Open Banking and provide any additional supporting documentation14. Just Credit Union offers an online application form or a printed copy to download, complete and return16.

For higher loan values, Coalisland Credit Union may hold a loan interview. Its policy states: "To establish that you can repay each loan you apply for, we may conduct a loan interview. We will ask you about your income and expenses. We may also ask for additional information and documentation to further your application. With your agreement, we will carry out a credit reference check"2.

Will Coalisland Credit Union do a credit check on me?

It may, and it will ask first. The credit union's policy says: "With your agreement, we will carry out a credit reference check"4. That check sits alongside the affordability assessment, the loan interview for higher values, and the review of your savings and repayment history2.

A credit reference check of this kind is recorded on your credit file and can be visible to other lenders. Capital Credit Union draws the distinction clearly: an eligibility check "won't affect your credit score", but a full application triggers "a hard credit check" that "will be recorded on your credit file and may be visible to other lenders"19. Salford Credit Union says it may make searches at credit reference agencies and may use credit scoring to assist the application and verify identity17.

If you want to see what a lender will see, you can check your credit report with Experian, Equifax or TransUnion26. The credit scores guide explains what appears on a report and how long entries stay there.

How your savings are protected at Coalisland Credit Union

Savings and loans held with credit unions are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme27. That protection works the same way as it does at a bank or building society: Carlisle and District Credit Union describes members' savings up to £120,000 as "100% protected, the same as any other Bank, Building Society or approved financial institution"28.

Coalisland Credit Union is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority6. Its firm reference number is 573861 and its permission includes accepting deposits6. It also appears on the Bank of England's list of credit unions incorporated in the UK7. You can check any firm's status yourself on the FCA Register.

Credit unions are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and the FCA's remit covers credit products including personal loans and overdrafts29. If something goes wrong with a credit union and it cannot resolve your complaint, the Financial Ombudsman Service can look at it31.

Contacting Coalisland Credit Union and complaining

Coalisland Credit Union's website is at www.coalislandcu.com, which is the address recorded on the FCA Register6. Its loan pages, product pages and application route all sit on that site, and the credit union's own pages carry the current rates, terms and contact details.

If something goes wrong, the route is the same as with any regulated financial firm. Raise the complaint with the credit union first and give it the chance to put things right. If you are not satisfied with the response, or eight weeks pass without a final answer, you can take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free to consumers31. The consumer protection guide explains how the ombudsman service, the FCA and the compensation scheme fit together, and the credit unions guide covers how the sector works more broadly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a member of Coalisland Credit Union before I can borrow?

Yes. You must be a member of a credit union to get a loan from it, and some credit unions ask you to build up savings first. Coalisland Credit Union asks for 10% of the amount you want to borrow to be held in savings, so in practice you join and save before or alongside the loan. All loans are subject to approval and to its loan policy.

Can I take money out of my savings while I still have a loan?

Not freely. The shares attached to your loan are pledged as collateral, and withdrawing them needs the approval of the credit committee while a loan balance remains. In some cases the credit union asks for more than 10% of the loan to be held in savings. Once your outstanding loan is less than the amount in the account, the restriction lifts.

Will Coalisland Credit Union do a credit check on me?

It may. For higher loan values it may carry out a credit reference check with your agreement, and it may hold a loan interview where it asks about your income and expenses. It also weighs affordability, your loan history or character, and your pledged shares. A credit check of this kind is recorded on your credit file.

Can I pay off my Coalisland Credit Union loan early?

Yes. Coalisland Credit Union charges no early repayment or lump sum charges, and no application fees. Paying a loan off sooner means you pay less interest overall, because interest is charged on the reducing balance. Other credit unions describe the same approach, with no penalty for repaying early.

What is the interest rebate paid to borrowing members?

Coalisland Credit Union repays an interest rebate to all borrowing members annually. It is a refund of some of the loan interest you paid during the year. Whether one is paid, and how much, depends on the credit union's performance in its financial year, so it is not a fixed or guaranteed amount.

Do I have to attend an interview to get a loan?

Possibly. Coalisland Credit Union may hold a loan interview for higher loan values, to establish that you can repay. It will ask about your income and expenses and may request supporting documents. Smaller loans often go through without one, and the whole process can be completed remotely, with applications and signatures handled online.

Is Coalisland Credit Union regulated by the FCA?

Yes. Coalisland Credit Union Limited is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority. Its firm reference number is 573861 and its status has been authorised since 31 March 2012. Its permission includes accepting deposits.
