Gateway Credit Union

Gateway Credit Union is a not-for-profit savings and loans co-operative for people who live or work in Torfaen, Monmouthshire and the surrounding parts of South East Wales. Here is what it offers, who can join, how to pay money in and take it out, how long a loan decision takes, and how your savings are protected.

Gateway Credit Union logo

Gateway Credit Union is a not-for-profit savings and loans co-operative based in Pontypool, serving people who live or work in Torfaen, Monmouthshire and the surrounding parts of South East Wales. It is a members' organisation: you join, you save, and once you are a member you can borrow. Membership carries an annual fee taken from your share account on or after 30 September, and you need a small cash deposit to open the account if you join in person1.

It is a small credit union rather than a bank, so the range is narrower than a high street current account: savings accounts, personal loans, a Child Trust Fund for children, and Community Accounts for local groups and charities. There is no current account and no chequebook. What it does offer is a branch you can walk into, a payroll partnership with a long list of local employers, and a stated willingness to lend to members on a low income or with a poor credit history, provided the loan would not make an existing debt problem worse2.

This page covers who can join, what each account does, how charges work, how to pay in and take out, how a loan application works, and how your money is protected. It does not carry Gateway's rates or charges, which change and belong on Gateway's own site.

Who can join Gateway Credit Union

Credit unions work on a "common bond": you have to share something with the other members, usually where you live or work5. Gateway's common bond is for individuals who live or work in South East Wales, namely Torfaen, Monmouthshire and the surrounding areas1. If you are outside that area, you cannot join this one, though most local areas have a credit union of their own6.

The common bond is wider than it sounds. Anyone in the house of a person with a common bond with a credit union can usually join, so a partner or family member living at the same address may qualify through you6. Gateway also runs a payroll deduction scheme with a long list of local employers, including Torfaen County Borough Council, Monmouthshire County Council, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, the Welsh Ambulance Service, Public Health Wales, Monmouthshire Housing Association, Bron Afon Community Housing, Pobl Housing Group, Cartrefi Cymru, Celtic Manor Resort, Halo Leisure, Robert Price Builders Merchants, Monmouthshire Mind, H and H Engineering, Hedyn, PIA and Citizens Advice Torfaen1. Staff of those organisations are eligible for a discounted interest rate on loans repaid by payroll1.

You must be a member to have a Gateway loan, so joining comes first2. The credit union also offers membership to small local charities and community groups through its Community Accounts, which are covered below1.

Gateway savings accounts: shares, Christmas and special events

The Share Account is the foundation. You open it when you become a member, and it holds your membership stake in the credit union4. Everything else sits alongside it. Gateway lets you deposit across multiple savings accounts, such as Shares, Christmas Savings and Special Events, and you tell it how to split the money7.

AccountWhat it is forWho it suits
Share AccountYour membership stake; the account you open when you join4Every member
Christmas SavingsA dedicated pot for the festive period7Members who want December money set aside
Special Events AccountWeddings, trips abroad, big birthdays, school proms, a new car, home improvements, funeral expenses8A known expense with a date attached
Child Trust FundA savings account locked until the child's 18th birthday, not invested in shares9Children in the common bond area, or children of existing members

Credit unions generally offer these alongside junior savings accounts, prepaid debit cards, cash ISAs and, at some, mortgages, though the range varies by credit union10.

The Special Events Account is the flexible one. Gateway members use it for weddings, trips abroad, big birthday and anniversary parties, school proms, a summer holiday fun fund, a new car, home improvements, or to leave a sum for funeral expenses8. It is a goal-based savings account rather than a general one.

The Child Trust Fund is only available to children who live in the common bond area, or who are children of existing Gateway members, and it can only be opened by transferring an existing Child Trust Fund from another provider9. For savings generally, see our guide to savings accounts.

Gateway loans and how the attached savings rule works

Gateway offers personal loans to members, subject to status, affordability and its normal lending criteria11. It says it wants to lend to members who are on top of their finances, even if they are on a low income or have a poor credit history, but it refuses loans that would worsen existing debt problems2. That is a narrower promise than "we lend to anyone", and it is the sentence to read twice.

The feature that surprises new borrowers is attached savings. Gateway asks all members to save a small amount alongside their loan repayments, and those attached savings are locked until the loan is cleared2. So a loan from Gateway is not just a loan: it is a loan plus a forced savings habit, and the savings are not available to you until the debt is gone. If you miss payments, the credit union may be able to use your savings to repay the loan12.

Repayments can be made by having benefits paid into the credit union, by payroll deduction, or by standing order weekly, fortnightly, four weekly or monthly2. Gateway offers discounts for payroll members and homeowners2. It reports to credit reference agencies, so a good history with it builds your credit score2.

If a loan is refused and you think it was affordable for you, Gateway says it will review it2. That is worth knowing, because a refusal is not always final.

Community Accounts for local groups and charities

Gateway offers Community Accounts to small local charities and community groups1. They are designed for organisations that need somewhere to bank deposits and make withdrawals into a nominated bank account, and for small charities that need an account in order to accept grants1.

The practical differences from a personal account are worth setting out:

  • Up to three registered signatories on the account1
  • A maximum balance of £30,0001
  • No chequebook, but Gateway can issue cheques or make payments for you1
  • Signatories are not credit checked, and although ID is required, Gateway says it is more flexible about what it accepts1
  • Community Accounts attract the same rate of dividend as other savings1

Credit unions more widely do offer club and charity accounts: associations, societies, clubs and charities can hold accounts with some credit unions13. If you run a group that needs an account to receive a grant, this is one route, and it avoids the account being held in one volunteer's personal name.

Membership fees and dormant account charges

The annual membership fee is taken from your GCU share account on or after 30 September each year1. A deposit is also needed to activate your account, and joining in person requires a small cash deposit1. Gateway sets the current amounts on its own site.

There is a dormant account charge. If you have not used your account in a 24-month period, it will be made dormant and a fee may be charged at the end of September3. Two years of no activity is a long time, but it catches people who open an account, save a small amount, and forget about it. A single transaction resets the clock.

On loans, if Gateway has to chase payments or take recovery action, it passes the costs on to the borrower, including registering a default or court action2. That is standard across lenders, but it is the reason a missed payment costs more than the payment itself.

Paying in through your employer, benefits or Child Benefit

There are several ways to get money into a Gateway account, and the right one depends on how you are paid.

  1. Payroll deduction. If your employer is a GCU payroll partner, savings and loan repayments can come straight out of your pay7. The list of partner organisations is long and local, and it is worth checking before you set up a standing order7.
  2. Benefits. If you do not use online banking and your employer is not a payroll partner, you can have one or more of your benefits paid directly into your GCU account7. Benefits are usually paid straight into your bank, building society or credit union account, so a credit union account is a normal destination for them14. Universal Credit is paid into your bank, building society or credit union account15.
  3. Child Benefit. Child Benefit can also be paid directly into a Gateway account, and you can choose to put some or all of it towards your savings11.
  4. Cash and cheques. Gateway also accepts cash and cheques made payable to you7.
  5. Bank transfer. Use your GCU member number, surname and forename as the reference, for example 1234 Smith A7.

Any loan repayments and attached savings due are deducted first from money received, and anything left over goes into your GCU Shares unless you say otherwise7.

Getting the reference right is what stops a payment being held while Gateway works out where it belongs.

How to join and what ID you need

You can join in person or online, and the ID requirements differ slightly.

Joining in person:

  • At least one form of ID from List A and at least one document from List B1
  • Your National Insurance number, which is required to open the account1
  • A small cash deposit to open the account1
  • If you are applying for a loan at the same time, proof of income such as payslips, benefits and tax credit letters, and 3 months of bank statements if you have a bank account1

Joining online or by post: Gateway may be able to verify your identity online using the electoral register and other records, including verification with credit reference agencies1. If you live with a partner and share your financial responsibilities, Gateway will need proof of their income and identity as well, normally obtained via open banking1.

For a Young Saver Account, Gateway needs ID for the adult signatory and copies of the child's birth certificate or passport1. For a Child Trust Fund, you complete the application form and send or bring it with the transfer form, any other sums you want to pay in, and the child's birth certificate9.

Credit unions generally ask you to visit or call to confirm what information you need to join, because requirements vary5. If you are unsure, that call saves a wasted trip.

Applying for a loan: documents and affordability checks

Gateway aims to give a decision within up to 5 working days from the day it receives all relevant documentation3. Once you confirm acceptance, it sends a signable document by email within 24 hours3. The clock starts when the paperwork is complete, not when you apply, so a missing statement is the most common cause of delay.

You will need proof of ID, address and National Insurance number, along with 3 months of bank statements3. If you are employed, Gateway may ask for 3 months of wage slips3. It usually checks affordability via open banking or your bank statements as well as a credit report, and for some loans it will ask for payslips2.

Affordability checks are standard across lenders: how a lender decides whether to give you credit depends on your income, outgoings and credit history16. Gateway's own version of that check is the open banking or statement review plus the credit report2. It reports to credit reference agencies, so the loan appears on your credit file2.

If you have a poor credit rating, borrowing generally becomes more expensive and harder17. Credit unions exist partly to provide access to fair and affordable credit for people with a poor credit history, and to help those who cannot access mainstream credit18. Gateway's stated position is that it will lend to members on a low income or with a poor credit history, but not where the loan would worsen existing debt problems2. If you are considering consolidating debts, our guide to debt sets out the options and the free advice services.

Banking with Gateway: app, online, office and drop-in

Gateway is not app-only. Credit unions typically offer online and phone banking, a payroll partnership with your employer, a local branch or service point you can walk into, or a combination of all three19. Gateway's own mix is online banking, a mobile app, a main office in Pontypool, and a weekly drop-in.

The drop-in runs every Friday, 10:00am to 12:00pm, at Cwmbran Library, starting Friday 11 September20. No appointment is needed20. One important limit: no cash is handled on site, so the library sessions are for guidance and account support only20. If you need to make cash deposits, withdrawals or other in-person transactions, the main Pontypool office remains open as usual every Friday afternoon20.

For free, credit union accounts usually let you pay in or take out cash at the credit union, have money paid in such as wages, benefits and pensions, use online, mobile or telephone banking, and get budgeting advice and support21. Gateway's app does not support downloading a full statement for the past year; that has to be done by logging in to online banking on a laptop or desktop computer3.

Withdrawals are quick by credit union standards:

When you request itWhen it reaches your bank
Before 4pmBy 5pm the same day3
After 4pmBy 12pm the following working day3
At the weekendThe following working day by 5pm3

For comparison, some other providers take longer: NS&I says withdrawals can take 3 to 5 days to reach your bank account on some products22.

How your savings are protected

Savings with Gateway Credit Union are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and in the event of a credit union collapsing 100% of the first £120,000 of any savings is refunded4. Loans and savings with credit unions are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme18.

That £120,000 figure is the same protection level as a bank or building society, and it applies per person per institution. It covers your Share Account and your other Gateway savings accounts, including the Special Events Account, which Gateway describes as 100% safe like all your other Gateway savings8.

Members of working age also benefit from free life insurance on their loans1. That is cover attached to the loan, not a separate policy you buy, and it is worth checking the terms if it matters to you.

One protection that does not apply here: there is no Section 75 cover, because Gateway does not issue credit cards. Section 75 applies to credit card purchases, not to credit union loans.

Contacting Gateway and complaining

Gateway's main office is in Pontypool, and the Cwmbran Library drop-in runs every Friday morning for guidance and account support, with no cash handled on site20. Cash transactions are handled at the Pontypool office on Friday afternoons20.

If something goes wrong, complain to Gateway first. If you are not satisfied with its final response, you can take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free to consumers. Credit unions are covered by the ombudsman in the same way as banks.

For anyone in immediate difficulty, there are specialist services. Urgent help with gambling is available through credit union signposting services25, and urgent help with domestic abuse is available the same way26. These are not Gateway services; they are national helplines that credit unions point members towards.

Is Gateway Credit Union the same as Torfaen Credit Union?

Yes. The FCA register lists Torfaen Credit Union and Pontypool And District Credit Union as previous names of Gateway Credit Union, which also trades as GCU27. The firm's reference number is 214010, its status is Authorised with an effective date of 02/07/2002, and its permission is accepting deposits27. It appears on the Bank of England's list of credit unions incorporated in the UK25.

So if you joined under the Torfaen name, you are a member of the same credit union, with the same savings and the same protection. The name changed; the organisation did not.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Gateway Credit Union loan decision take?

Gateway aims to give a decision within up to 5 working days from the day it receives all the relevant documentation. Once you confirm acceptance, it sends a signable document by email within 24 hours. The clock only starts when the paperwork is complete, so missing payslips or statements will push the decision back.

What reference do I use when paying money into my Gateway account?

Use your GCU member number followed by your surname and forename. Gateway gives the example 1234 Smith A. Getting the reference right matters because payments are matched to your account by it, and a payment that cannot be matched may be held while the credit union works out where it belongs.

When do withdrawals reach my bank account?

Withdrawals made before 4pm reach your bank by 5pm the same day. Withdrawals after 4pm arrive by 12pm the following working day, and withdrawals made at the weekend arrive the following working day by 5pm. These are Gateway's own stated timescales.

Can I download a full statement from the Gateway app?

Not from the mobile app, which Gateway says does not support that feature. To download a full statement for the past year you need to log in to online banking on a laptop or desktop computer. The app is fine for day-to-day checking, but the full-year download is a desktop job.

Can I get a Gateway loan with a poor credit history?

Gateway says it wants to lend to members who are on top of their finances even if they are on a low income or have a poor credit history, but it refuses loans that would worsen existing debt problems. Every application is subject to status, affordability and its normal lending criteria, and it will review a refusal if you think the loan was affordable for you.

Why might a payment into my account be held before I can withdraw it?

Gateway says large, suspicious or unexpected payments may be subject to a 2 week clearance period before they can be withdrawn, under its anti-money laundering and fraud prevention policies. Any loan repayments and attached savings due are also deducted from money received before the rest reaches your savings.

Is Gateway Credit Union the same as Torfaen Credit Union?

It is the same organisation under a new name. The FCA register lists Torfaen Credit Union Limited and Pontypool And District Credit Union Limited as previous names of Gateway Credit Union Limited, which also trades as GCU. Anyone who joined under the old name is a member of the same credit union.

Is my money with Gateway Credit Union protected?

Yes. Gateway is a member of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and in the event of a credit union collapsing 100% of the first £120,000 of any savings is refunded. That is the same protection level as a bank or building society, and it covers savings held in your Share Account and any other Gateway savings accounts.
