Calderdale Credit Union takes savings from its members and lends to them. It is a small local lender serving people who live or work in the Boroughs of Calderdale or Kirklees, and joining an employer payroll scheme makes you a member1. Loans carry no set-up fee and no early repayment charge, interest is calculated on a daily basis, and repayments can come out of your pay, by standing order, or from benefit income3.
It describes itself as a mutual non-profit organisation, not a charity or government funded, and it is owned by the people who save and borrow with it rather than by shareholders1. It is authorised by the FCA since 2 July 2002, and any profits it makes are returned to members as an annual dividend4. Savings are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and the credit union states deposits up to £85,000 are protected5. The current FSCS deposit limit is £120,000 per eligible person, per bank, building society or credit union, since 1 December 20256.
This page covers what it offers across its products, who can join, how to apply, what happens if repayments become difficult, how to complain, and how your money is protected.
What Calderdale Credit Union offers members
Calderdale Credit Union is a savings and loan credit union. Its member benefits are listed as stress-free saving, partnership loan interest rates, secure savings accounts, debit card facilities, budget account and support, product updates, and a potential annual dividend on savings5. The dividend point matters: because a credit union is not a company with shareholders, any surplus can be shared among members rather than paid out as profit, though a dividend is never guaranteed.
Credit unions as a group offer savings and loans, and many go further with junior savings accounts, Christmas savings accounts, prepaid debit cards, insurance products, cash ISAs and in some cases mortgages7. Calderdale Credit Union's own published product set is narrower than that: savings, loans, a payroll saving scheme and a family loan and savings scheme. If you want a current account with a debit card, a cash ISA or a mortgage, the wider market is where those sit, and our guides to current accounts, ISAs and mortgages explain how those products work.
The credit union is not a bank. A credit union is a cooperative financial institution, and credit unions are not-for-profit community lenders providing affordable loans and savings9. That structure shapes what it does: it lends to its own members, from its own members' deposits, rather than to the general public.
Saving with Calderdale Credit Union
Saving is the foundation of membership. Calderdale Credit Union states that the main requirement to apply for any loan is that you must save while paying back the loan1. In practice that means a loan and a savings habit run together, and the amount you save is set by you rather than by the credit union.
Credit unions generally let you save as little or as much as you want, each week, fortnight or month, and members can usually pay in or take out cash at the credit union, have wages, benefits and pensions paid in, use online, mobile or telephone banking, and get budgeting advice and support, all free11. Some credit unions also offer life insurance on savings and loan protection insurance on loans at no additional cost to members who qualify, so it is worth asking what is included with your account13.
Your savings are shares in the credit union rather than a bank deposit in the strict sense, but the protection works the same way for the saver: all shares and savings in an affiliated credit union are eligible for protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme14. Our guide to savings accounts sets out how savings products compare across the market.
Saving through your employer's payroll
Calderdale Credit Union runs an Employer Partnership Scheme that allows you to save through your payroll, so the money leaves your pay before you see it5. Choosing to join the scheme makes you a member of the credit union, and scheme members can then apply for the credit union's partnership loans5.
Payroll saving is common across the credit union movement. Leeds Credit Union, for example, lets employees of companies signed up to its payroll scheme join and save through their pay, and members who already save that way can change the amount deducted by emailing the credit union with their membership number and the new amount15. Other credit unions accept savings through local branch offices, local shops, direct debit or deductions straight from your pay16.
If you join a credit union and start saving with it, you will also be able to apply to borrow money once you have proved you are a reliable saver17. That is the trade-off of payroll saving: it builds the record that a loan application later depends on. If your employer is not signed up, ask the credit union whether it can be added, or save by standing order instead.
Calderdale Credit Union loans and how they work
Calderdale Credit Union lends to members who save with it. Repayments can be weekly, fortnightly, four weekly or monthly, by standing order, payroll deduction or from benefit income3. Interest is calculated on a daily basis, which means the interest you owe builds up on what is actually outstanding rather than on the original amount borrowed1.
Credit unions generally offer loan products suited to individual needs at rates members can afford, and all credit unions can lend small amounts for all purposes, with some able to lend larger amounts over longer periods, for example to buy a car or for home improvements11. Some credit unions will lend as soon as you become a member, while others will only lend after you have saved for a set period, and affordability is checked against the money you have left after paying your bills7.
One use members often put a credit union loan to is consolidating existing debts. A debt consolidation loan works by working out how much you need to borrow to pay off all your debt, applying for a loan for that amount, and, if approved, using the money to pay back each creditor, leaving one monthly repayment to the loan lender18. That can simplify repayments, but it does not reduce the total you owe, and moving unsecured debt onto a loan secured against anything you own changes your risk. Our guide to loans explains the different types.
Loan charges: no set-up fee and no early repayment charge
Calderdale Credit Union states plainly that there is no set-up fee or early repayment charge if you decide to pay off the loan early3. That combination is not universal in consumer credit, and it matters in two ways.
First, no set-up fee means the cost of borrowing is the interest alone, so the amount you repay over the term is the amount you borrowed plus interest. Second, no early repayment charge means paying the loan off ahead of schedule does not trigger a penalty, and because interest is calculated daily, clearing the balance early reduces the interest that builds up1.
Other credit unions take the same approach. Capital Credit Union advertises fixed repayments, no setup fees and no early repayment charges; Salford Credit Union advertises no admin charges, set-up fees or early repayment fees; and Oldham Credit Union advertises no extra charges for early repayments19. The credit union's own site carries today's interest rates and repayment figures, and those are the figures to check before applying.
Who can join and borrow
Membership of Calderdale Credit Union is built on a common bond. Anyone can become a member of a credit union, but you must share a common bond with other members, such as living or working in the same area8. For the Family Loan and Savings Scheme, Calderdale Credit Union can only accept applications from people who live or work in the Boroughs of Calderdale or Kirklees2.
Family membership can extend further. As long as one member of a family meets the common bond requirements and has joined the credit union, other family members living at the same address can usually join too7. So a household where one person works in Calderdale may be able to bring in others at the same address.
To borrow, there are two conditions on top of membership. You must save while paying back the loan, and you must meet the criteria to repay it1. Calderdale Credit Union also states that members must not be bankrupt or have entered into an individual voluntary arrangement or a debt relief order1. If you are in one of those debt solutions, free and impartial debt advice is available from StepChange and National Debtline, and our guide to debt sets out the options.
How to apply for a loan
Calderdale Credit Union says you can apply online using the link on its site1. Other credit unions take applications in person at the office, online in the member's area, by telephone, or through a members' hub if you have registered, so the channel varies by firm22.
You will need paperwork. Calderdale Credit Union asks for three months of most recent bank statements, three months of wage slips or proof of benefit income if applicable, and a Housing Benefit Notification and Council Tax Reduction Notification if applicable1. Credit unions generally also ask for two recent documents proving your identity and address, such as a passport, driving licence, student or work ID card, bus pass, birth certificate, bank statement or energy bill12. Other credit unions ask that proof of identification and address verification are up to date, with proof of income or bank statements where needed23.
A credit check forms part of the assessment. Calderdale Credit Union says its trained loan assessors check that you can afford to repay the loan, and that a credit check will be carried out as part of that assessment1. Other credit unions reserve the right to consult other credit unions and credit reference companies about a loan request22. If your application is refused, or conditions are imposed, Calderdale Credit Union says it will notify you in writing within 10 days1.
If you struggle to make repayments
Calderdale Credit Union asks members who cannot keep up with repayments to contact it as soon as possible so an alternative payment plan can be discussed1. That is the first and most useful step: a credit union that knows about a problem early has more room to help than one that finds out after missed payments.
The rules on lenders helping borrowers have tightened. A company must help if you are struggling to pay back what you owe, and that can include reducing or cancelling interest or fees24. Mortgage lenders can reduce monthly payments or allow a break from payments for a few months24. Universal Credit advances can have repayments delayed for up to three months if you cannot afford them, and the deadline can be extended by up to three months if you are struggling with money25.
If a debt is passed to a collection agency, the agency can take court action if you do not pay27. Free help exists before that point: StepChange, National Debtline, Citizens Advice and Advice NI all advise on debt without charge, and our guide to debt explains the solutions available. If you are being contacted in a way that feels like harassment, there are rules on how creditors may behave, and free advice services can tell you what to do.
Complaints and the Financial Ombudsman Service
Calderdale Credit Union asks for complaints by email to admin@calderdalecreditunion.co.uk with "my complaint" in the subject box, or in writing to the Complaints Department, 15-19 Commercial Street, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX1 1HJ28. Where a complaint can be resolved within three business days, it sends a letter confirming the resolution and the right to refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service28. Where it cannot, it sends a written acknowledgement, and if after eight weeks there is still no satisfactory resolution, it confirms this and the timescale for a final response28.
You have the right to refer a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service free of charge, but you must do so within six months of the date of the final response28. The ombudsman service takes complaints about credit unions when a member is unhappy with the final response or the timeframe has passed12. Complaints are made by filling in the ombudsman's complaint form20.
The ombudsman covers a wide range of financial complaints, including how lenders and debt collection agencies have treated borrowers, and complaints about credit reference agencies once the agency's own complaints procedure has been exhausted29. If a complaint is about something on your credit file, you can also ask the agency to add a Notice of Correction explaining any errors or inaccurate information30. In Northern Ireland, the Consumer Council can take complaints about financial services and pass them on31.
FSCS protection for your savings
Savings with Calderdale Credit Union are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. The credit union states that its savings accounts are fully covered by the FSCS up to £85,000, and that deposits up to the value of £85,000 are protected2. The current FSCS deposit limit is £120,000 per eligible person, per bank, building society or credit union, since 1 December 20256. Credit union savings are protected by the FSCS in the same way as bank and building society deposits7.
The limit works per person, not per account. The FSCS protects each account holder up to £120,000 in total across all accounts held with the credit union, so joint account holders are each covered separately, meaning £240,000 for two holders32. That is the figure the scheme itself publishes for credit unions, and it is higher than the £85,000 the credit union quotes on its own pages. Both figures appear in the documents, and the scheme's own published limit is the one that governs a claim.
Protection has edges. Credit insurance is not eligible for FSCS protection, so a policy sold alongside a loan is not covered in the same way as a deposit33. And protection applies to money held with the credit union, not to money you have already borrowed and spent.
